Converting the movement and change of an object into a smooth animation

People, I have put a note on the developer list for a more difficult problem but I wonder if there is a solution to a simpler bit of the puzzle: Say I have a first drawing with a short, vertical, straight line and I drag it into a long, horizontal, straight line and save it is a second drawing ie it would be nice if I can have an initial object and a moved / changed object and a plugin or an external program that will be able to smoothly animate the change from the first drawing to the second - is that possible? when importing pdf/eps there are compression artefacts in bitmaps embedded in the pdf/eps

Dear all, maybe this is a feature request, bug, or simply a question, so I put it onto this mailing list: When I import an eps that contains a bitmap (e.g. an eps generated from a MATLAB figure, that also has an image displayed), the bitmap in the imported form does not show the original pixels anymore but suffers from compression artefacts. These artefacts are not very visible for large image with small pixels relative to the total image size. However, I often need to display zoomed regions of microscopy image, where those compressions are having quite a detrimental effect on the import. As an example I created a MATLAB figure with 10x10 random pixels. I attach the svg file where I imported the MATLAB figure after saving it as a PNG within MATLAB and another import of the eps file that I saved with MATLAB. The artefacts are clearly visible. ;) Most times the compression is probably great to reduce overall file size, but in occasions like the ones described above it would be great to have a different or no compression of the bitmaps during import. While copying lines the end marks (arrows and others) are not copied

I have some strange experience while copying: I copied all the elements in a figure and lost the full node marks(?, Knotenmarkierung). This is hopefully not an intended behaviour. I never encountered it. Select over all layers copy insert and the arrows etc were gone. I can put them back but I find it strange and maybe a bug. The yellow background is one layer, the arrows are the next and text is the other. regards Bernhard

node tool control bar icons missing (not urgent)

Hi Friends, I had an odd experience earlier today. I opened Inkscape from my Windows 7 Start menu, like I usually do. Many of the Node tool control bar icons are missing, and showing that same red X icon, that the Undo and Redo buttons have been showing for 0.91 (instead of the real icons). I opened a new doc from Inkscape, and I opened another from the Start menu again, and those icons appear normally, as expected. I made a screenshot to show (attached). I don't think it's a permanent problem, but I'm curious what happened. I only have a vague understanding for how Inkscape handles icons. I have the idea that Inkscape calls for them from another folder. So does this mean there was some kind of problem when Inkscape called for them, and couldn't get them, for some reason? Not an urgent problem. I'm just curious :-) Thanks, brynn

Trouble compiling Inkscape on Ubuntu 14.04

Hello all, Because I had been issues with extremely sluggish text editing in complex SVG files (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1219794?comments=all) I thought I'd get the source code and apply the (very simple) patch provided in that bug thread and compile it myself. I was able to get a working copy of the trunk, and I read the INSTALL file. However, the "./configure" file was not present (even though INSTALL seemed to assume it should be there). I managed to generate the configure-script by running "./autogen.sh" (after installing the required dependencies). When I try to run ./configure, however, it does some stuff, and then gives me an error: ./configure: line 5995: syntax error near unexpected token `2.2' ./configure: line 5995: `LT_PREREQ(2.2)' Checking a bit further back, it actually seems that although the autogen.sh ended with "Done! Please run './configure' now.", there is an error there as well. I am attaching the full output of both autogen.sh and the subsequent call to configure to this email. Hopefully someone can help me to compile Inkscape, so I could apply the patch for mega-slow text editing and get back to designing my poster :) Thank you, best, Eelke Spaak

Hi! I just wanted to share with you an extension I developed that might be useful for some of you, specially for inkscape web designers. Its a extension that has two functionalities: - Create image placeholders in any size and width with random images from unsplash <https://unsplash.it/> - Create random user avatars from uifaces <http://uifaces.com/>. Hi, I had an idea for a feature in inkscape, and I submitted a wishlist bug on 5-17-2014 and noone seems interested. It is a suggestion for a LPE for a spirograph pattern generator. I did some research and found the necessary math info to make the shapes, and the algorithm needed to make the result from the math usable in inkscape. I was thinking it would be great for certificates, and suchlike. Plus I think it would just be great fun to play with. Is anyone else interested? Maybe someone who knows calculus and c++? Fill "only on one layer"

People, I am trying to create a series of sketches to show changes to roof tressles (I want to create a wide manhole - see start of first sketch attached) but I have run into problems with adding a fill colour (as shading for the beams). It seems like it would be quicker and easier for me if I could get the fill action to fill on ONE layer instead of taking all of the lines for all the of layers into account - but this doesn't appear to work? - is it possible somehow? Colors in image conversion from svg to PDF

Hello all, I would like to find an automatic solution for the following workflow. * open/import file (eg. eps format) o select all paths of color x (ctr+f in xml editor for first hex-color string) o ctrl++ to union selection o repeat for all remaining colors * export to svg or, if you will, <http://www.inkscapeforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=19402#> |open or import file (eg. eps format); for (all colors in drawing) { select all paths of the current color; perform union on selected paths; } export drawing; | I suppose there should be a solution along the lines of |inkscape -f input.eps --verb=EditDeselect --select=allPathsOfSameColors --verb=SelectionUnion --export-simple-svg| However, I have no clue how to go about selecting all paths of the same color or how to iterate over all colors. Choosing an Open Font for Inkscape "Draw Freely".

Hello fellow Inkscapeists! I'm C.Rogers, and I'm involved with the official tutorial videos, and some of Inkscape's logo and branding materials. TLDR: We are voting on an Open Font replacement for the "Draw Freely" Tagline. Jump down to the link and click it to see what the options are. Since the feedback so far has been good on the dev user-tutorial thread, I'd like to reach everyone I can to make this decision, in case not everyone is paying attention to the video tutorial stuff, so here's another opportunity to vote! In short: we'd like to replace the "Draw Freely" tagline with a font which we will use as an official font for the Inkscape project. The main reason for this is that the currently used font is proprietary, and the general consensus (via mailing list and #inkscape) is that we'd like to replace it with an open alternative. Reasons for this are: 1. We can not change the font - Thus, we are unable to add extra character support for other languages. 2. We can not use the font elsewhere without paying more license fees, and we would like to be able to use the same font on the website, in tutorial videos, and other user documentation. 3. We can not distribute the font with Inkscape materials without paying license fees. 4. Our users can't use the font in their own materials without paying license fees. 5. Open fonts rock, in all the same ways that Open Source software rocks, and contributes to creative freedom, which is in line with the project's creedo "Draw Freely". Hi, I have Inkscape 0.91 and find the following very irritating: when I open Strg-Shift-D (document) or similar than the opening part of the screen is about one fourth of the screen. Trying to decrease the space by working with the mouse on the separation line changes the mouse cursor but the line stays immovable. When one is in Fullscreen mode it can be tolerated but when using only part of screen it should decrease accordingly. It stays with the orignimal width. That is most irritating. Has anybody else found this same behaviour? Regards Bernhard

white tooltip text is hard to read

Is there a way to change the color of the tooltip text? Now it's white on gray and hard to see. I don't see anything in ~/.config/inkscape/preferences.xml that allows this to be changed. Black on gray would be nice. Specifically where this came up is in the magnify context. Fit selection, drawing and page icons are the same. Tooltips are needed to distinguish the action associated with each icon. Thank you Carl

Hi Friends, I use a 5 px stroke width often, and I also use the context menu for the stroke width in the Style Indicator area. That menu offers widths: 0.1 0.25 0.5 0.75 1 1.5 2 3 4 6 7 8 10 ...... I understand leaving out 9, but I don't understand leaving in 7. But what I don't understand the most, is that 5 is left out. Is there any relatively easy way I can add "5" into my own menu? Ctrl + Delete issue for deleting nodes

Hi Friends, Was there supposed to be a change for Ctrl + Delete in 0.91? I used to use Ctrl + Delete (pre 0.91) to delete a single node, when I did not want to preserve the shape. It essentially would leave a straight segment. Delete alone would try to preserve the shape. Now it seems that Ctrl + Delete does preserve the shape, while just Delete does something in between preserving the original shape and not preserving it. (And it really is not very close to preserving the shape at all. Actually Ctrl + Delete preserves the shape better than just Delete.) Here's the relevant section of the K/M Ref page: https://inkscape.org/en/doc/keys091.html#d0e4087 Attached is a convenient file for testing. The middle smooth node it the one I'm testing on. This is using 0.91, 32-bit (exe installer) on Windows 7, 64-bit. Technically, the following is entirely a separate issue, but somewhat related. In the K/M Ref page, it shows "click + click" to add a new node. However, I think it should technically be "double-click". Click + click with the Node tool simply selects the 2 nodes on either side of the mouse. It takes a real double-click to add a node. (This has to do with the speed of clicking.) It does say "double-click" in the fine print, but I think the bold print should say "double-click". I'll be glad to write up bug reports for either or both of these, if they are indeed bugs. The Story of Tommy Trimble - animated Inkscape SVG's

For those who might be interested, I've uploaded to YouTube a narrated and animated children's story I wrote -- The Story of Tommy Trimble. I hired an illustrator and animator to draw the graphics using Inkscape and animate the SVG's using the Animatron.com web site -- which is in some ways a "primitive Adobe After Effects/Adobe Flash." Creating a book cover.

There are lots of topics I need education on in this task but let me start at the end and work backward. I will import a file into Scribus and produce a file in pdf x/1a:2001 format using a particular icc profile that limits ink coverage particularly in rich black situations. Now considering all the objectives, cmyk presentation of colors being paramount, what file format is optimal being saved from Inkscape 0.91 and imported into Scribus 1.5.0. I see three candidates: svg, pdf, and tiff. I'll be asking a similar question on the Scribus list. Arrow heads colored

Do I miss anything of a new development? The problem is very old in Inkscape: when one wants to color an arrow, the head remains black. Is there any proposition how to change the color of arrow heads. I like Inkscape very much but this is anoying since the problem is old. I use Inkscape 0.48 on Windows 7. Regards Bernhard

A problem editing text.

Hello: I am currently editing some .svg figures created in R and cannot seem to get the text in the figures to be recognized as text. Double-clicking on the text doesn't switch to the text objects cursor. When I select a piece of text, change to the text-object cursor and hover over the text I do not get the expected blue outline indicating Inkscape recognizes the characters as text. I can ungroup the text to give individual characters, which Inkscape is telling me are "objects of the type Symbol". Because this seems to be a recent development I'm wondering if my recent system update could be part of the problem. I recently updated to Mac OS 10.10.3 and am running XQuartz 2.7.7. When I go back to R-generated .svg files from before my upgrade I cannot edit the text in these files either, though I'm pretty sure I could before. Does this seem to make any sense to anyone? Trace Bitmap dialog does not appear

Hi Friends, I've been trying to help someone on InkscapeForum.com. They report that the Trace Bitmap dialog does not appear for them, since they installed 0.91. I've worked through every possible scenario that I know of, where a user can't find a dialog. (There have been a lot of these messages, since all dialogs became docked in 0.91) But in this case, the dialog still does not appear for them. And no one else has joined the discussion, with other ideas. We're hoping some advanced Inkscape users or maybe even developers could review the thread, and offer advice. Trace Bitmap oddity

Hi Friends, Another situation where I'm not sure if this is how it's supposed to be, or if it might be a bug. I opened the Trace Bitmap dialog, and left it open while I did other things, even in other files, so when I came back, it would still be usable, without having to close and re-open the file. I had dragged it almost completely off the canvas, to be out of the way. (I normally keep it undocked, so it doesn't stretch the docking area.) So when I was ready to use it again, I dragged it back on to the canvas, and the Preview area is showing an object that's selected in another file! I always have wondered why having Trace Bitmap (and some other dialogs) open in one file, makes it open for all files. But I assumed it would only be functional in the file from which it was opened. Anyway, just in case it's a problem :-) Thanks, brynn

status bar reports different font/text size

Hi Friends, I just noticed something that's different in 0.91. I searched for bug reports, but did not find. But now that I'm subscribed to this list, it seems better to report here, than make a bug report, since I often seem to make duplicate reports. When I set some text to be 18, the status bar tells me it's 22.50. Set to 16, status bar says 20, etc. Is it a bug? Or is there a reason? Whatever the reason, the size the user chooses should be shown in the status bar, imo. This is Inkscape 0.91, 32-bit, on Windows 7, 64-bit. Also occurs in 0.91, 64-bit. Does not occur in 0.48.5. Fixed line width with calligraphy-tool possible?

G'day, the current setting of the line with with the calligraphy tool is related to the window size, so that line width changes if one zooms in or out on the screen. Is there a way to set a fixed line width that does not change with zoom? I did not find any hints and google did not help either (which might just be me, searching for the wrong terms). From their website: http://www.pantone.com/pantone-color-manager-software PANTONE COLOR MANAGER Software is a robust desktop application that works in tandem with your favorite design software to ensure you always have the most up-to-date set of PANTONE Colors available at your fingertips. Looks like it works with Adobe, QuarkXPress, and Corel. I emailed them on this, and they said if Inkscape can import libraries in Adobe format, it may be possible to save the libraries from PANTONE Color Manager and import them. license for icons on website

Hi Friends, I've been trying to read about licenses, and trying to figure out if I could use the Inkscape_Logo2_1_1.png icon, as a link on my forum (http://forum.inkscapecommunity.com/index.php?action=forum) directly to the Download page (https://inkscape.org/en/download/). Inkscape_Logo2_1_1.png is the icon with the big green down arrow, on this page https://inkscape.org/en/download/windows/. But the language with the licenses is hard for me to understand. I guess the Inkscape logo by itself is ok to use, as far as I understand the Inkscape Trademark Policy (https://inkscape.org/en/about/trademark-policy/). But I'm not sure if the download icon on the website might be a different case. (A software could be open source, but it's website *could* still be copyrighted. I'm just not exactly sure about Inkscape's. There's no copyright statement on the website, but like some other things(CoC for gallery comments), maybe it's just not be written yet.) I think I could use the Inkscape logo and add a slightly different green arrow myself. But using the download icon from the website, I'm just not sure about. Would someone clear me up about that, in a not too technical way? Thank you very much, brynn

Hi Friends, Mostly out of curiosity, I wonder who makes Inkscape's icons? Is there usually one person who does it? Or does whoever creates tools or features have the honor or responsibility to make the icons? I know that it's possible to use different or custom icon sets, if one either wants to create their own, or they install some that someone else made. But who creates the icons that ship with Inkscape? I guess I'm talking about .../share/icons/icons.svg. Thanks :-) brynn

Problem with Pattern when exporting to PDF or printing

Dear all We often use patterns to draw soil profiles and well logs to represent soil composition. Since Inkscape 0.91 we have a problem with exporting patterns to pdf and printing. In the printout or pdf the patterns disappear or appear as black areas. The patterns were defined with the previous version of inkscape. Question: is this problem known?
