Dashed path in inkscape

I am in need of a way to do a dashed path in inkscape. When I use the stroke to path it shows up on my SVG as a dashed path, but when it import that to my cutting machine it will cut as a regular path, not one that has holes in it. What I need is a single line with little pieces missing on the line. Does anyone know of an easy way to do this in inkscape? Bibi

Inkscape 0.46 on Ubuntu 9.04 - Lost Raster Effects

I have an interesting problem. I just noticed that with Inkscape 0.46 (built on April 8th) installed on Ubuntu 9.04 from the default repos has no Raster effects listed from the effects menu. This is the first time that I noticed it was missing since installing Ubuntu 9.04 in late April. They are listed in my SVN version (r21302) that I have compiled but the entire effect listing is broken. Do others have this problem? heathenx

Multiple duplicate, best practice?

Hi there, what is the best way to copy an item multiple times (let's say 30), when you have a fixed start and end point? Up to now I set the first and last object and then press [ctr] + d 28 times, then distribute them all with "distribute and align". Not quite elegant... There's that "Multiple Clone" tool, but that seems to be a bit too complicated for me, as it never does what I want :-) Is there a howto for it? Maybe someone of you can give me tip? TIA, Lars

Shape Tool

I have opened a map in Inkscape, and I want to draw several stars to mark points on the map where attractions may be found. I choose the star shape tool from the tool bar, put the cursor on the spot where I want to put the first star, click and drag. It draws a star, but some distance from the point where I want it, and not a predictable distance or direction from where I put the cursor. Then I tried to select it in order to move it to the point where I want it, by clicking on it with the selection tool. It won't select. If I leave it selected after drawing it, I can't drag it where I want it. If I copy it and paste it, it pastes under the point where the word "paste" was in the edit dialog. How is this supposed to work? -Joe Ward

Tool pointer pixmaps

I've uploaded some improved (imho) pixmaps for the tool pointers in this bug report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/325145 --- The changes are: - Tweaked the appearance of 3dbox and eraser - added crosshairs to connector and bucket fill - new icon for bucket fill - Unified the appearance of pen and pencil tools - Unified the size and position of the color dropper icon The icons had different sizes and positions relative to the crosshairs, so I tried to unify that. Now the modified icons fit in a 26x26 square at the upper left of the total area (32x32) so there is space in the bottom left for potential modified versions (for instance adding a + sign for addition, like the gradient tool has). Some icons (bucket fill, color dropper and connector) have a slightly different hotspots now, so they'll have to be adjusted. There are others that can be adjusted, but with these changes at least the set is more homogenous in size and style. The pen icon for the bezier tool is in my opinion confusing, since the pen icon in the UI is assigned to the calligraphic tool. Nobody seems to matter, though. ---- The only change needed is to check and correct the tool hostpot in some of them, but I guess that would be a trivial change (that I don't know how to perform :-) What do you think?

Transform stroke into path

Hi, Is there a way to transform a stroke into a path? eg you create a shape, with a stroke. Then you want to remove parts of the stroke. Cutting the shape simply creates the stroke again around the modified shape, i would like to have the path created by the stroke as an object by itself. cedric

Hey All, With the About Screen Contest for 0.47 underway, one of the easiest things we all can do to help is to spread the word via social networking means. Whether it be blogging, tweeting (or RTs), posting on forums, you name it... the more of us that talk about, the more attention it will get. This contest PR effort could prove to be a good test of some of the needed PR mechanisms to make the announcement of 0.47 (when it is released) as loud, far reaching, and relevant as possible. So, again... the announcement which needs to be shown love (digg style button, yes it requires registration like digg) is here: http://news.deviantart.com/article/79268/ The more people that show the article love, the more people it will end up attracting the attention of on DA (which is important since it is the largest online art community/potential userbase). Want to help get us new users? This alone is one of the most effective methods. If you can make time to participate it would be greatly appreciated by all. Even if you aren't a programmer, you can help to confirm that bugs are indeed fixed by others. Trouble with kerning

Hello, I can't seem to adjust the kerning in text. I've been able to adjust it in the past (alt + arrows), but now it just won't work. I'm using Vista OS. Any thoughts on how I can fix this problem? Thank you. Julie

Printing PDF files - problem

As soon as I realized Inkscape has support to the python language scriptting, I try making a script that do for itself the frecuently-used actions I actually do in the files (Just modify some xml attributes of the same objects and export it to png). As I don't Know python language (I program in C/C++/vba) , May anyone guide me where I could get examples for that? I've just looked for in the inkscape wiki, but I'm a bit lost. Nightly/Testing Builds

Hey All, We seem to be in a bad place with our nightly builds. It would be excellent if we could have a few volunteers step up to produce nightlies (or at least builds from every few days). Anyone who can (or would like to) produce builds for Windows, Linux, and OSX would be making a great contribution to keeping us on track to release 0.47 in the near future. If you are interested, please speak up and we will do what we can to get you producing builds ASAP. For the record, this is how bad the situation is: Win32 - April 18th OSX - March 3rd Linux - nothing from this year (Autopackages are over a year old) So again, if lending some CPU cycles and a little time is all you can do, it is still a LOT for the community. Hi everyone! In the lead up to announcing the 0.47 release we are preparing an announcement to send to user groups, other open source projects and media outlets. As part of this, we would like to have some stories from Users to help bring this to life. A software release on its own isn't very interesting. It's what people do with that software that really inspires others to give it a go, and get involved. So... Name: This can be your full name, or an IRC nick, etc Photo: Just a headshot or avatar to identify you, and add colour and interest to the profile. Thoughts on Inkscape: What you think about the application, how you discovered it, what you use it for... etc. (up to 200 words) Tip: Something you think is cool/nifty/handy/useful, and would like to share with others about Using Inkscape, Artwork: an example piece of artwork/diagram/graphic showcasing how you use Inkscape. How I did it: Short description of the main tools / techniques used to create that artwork - optionally with step by step instructions if you feel like it. There has been a printing issue for a long time with inkscape 0.46 and so I have not been able to use it and have to go back to version 0.45 which has been very frustrating. I print out large banner size items and 0.46 does not print properly at all. "Fragment" Operation

Is there any way to perform a "fragment" operation in inkscape? Specifically, if you have multiple overlapping shapes, they all cut each other where they cross. For example, for two overlapping circles, you would end up with two crescents and a lens shape filling the space between. It is relatively easy to do this for two shapes (Duplicate, and perform an intersection, then on the original perform an exclusion followed by a break apart) but for a larger number of shapes the operations grow exponentially. add fake transpareny without real transparency

Hello, I have a small problem with inkscape 0.46: I have object1 that is above object2. Object1 has some kind of transparency since object2 should also seen through this transparency. This does work well in inkscape and the pdf output (via cairo) is also well. But only adobe reader and foxit reader seem to support pdf transparency, all the poppler based readers like okular, evince, sumatrapdf do not show the transparency. Thus, it is not a problem of inkscape but (maybe) poppler. My question: Is there a possibility to make inkscape to render a kind of fake transparency (that looks the same as real transpareny with an alpha channel) but that has no alpha channel (adjusting the other color channels of course). We need volunteers for the following tasks: Testing SVN/Nightly Build (windows and osx especially) Reviewing and triaging Bug Reports Updating Tutorials & Documentation Reviewing Release Notes for accuracy/completion Writing PR/Announcements for our upcoming release Those are needs we always really have, but, we can always use an extra hand in the lead-up to release. Right now, if we could have a lot of attention put on our bug tracker for confirming bugs, figuring out what has been fixed, tagging things, and just getting it in better shape for the bug hunt, it will make a world of difference to the people trying to fix things. Problem with wiki

I think I might have just seen a hidden problem with the wiki. I went to update a page on our versions, and saw contents for our release notes instead. http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Tracking_Dependencies The history listed things as expected, with the time of the last edit corresponding to the time I updated a table on that page. However, the contents were from that other page. Our servers were down for a bit the other day, so it is possible that something got corrupted. Could all of you take a quick moment to skim things and see if any pages are holding the wrong information? Thanks

Hi all, I just exported a map I drew in Inkscape 0.46 as a PDF. The map includes a link, but when I open the PDF, the link doesn't work. (When I open the SVG file in Firefox, the link is there alright.) Does Cairo ignore embedded hyperlinks? Is there a workaround for this? Hi I know it has been brought up before[1] but does anyone know if 1) it is possible to hack Inkscape 0.46 to make the vertical ruler zero at the top rather than the bottom of the page (or at least make it user selectable), or 2) whether there are plans afoot in future versions to implement this Personally I find it one of the biggest PITA with Inkscape and very counter-intuitive for my Anglocentric brain. Hi all, I am looking for a way to generate a 2D triangulation of a shape (in the attachment) by Inkscape using a triangulation tool, such as Gmsh (http://geuz.org/gmsh/) or else. Text un-bolds after saving as pdf via Cairo?

Hello all, this is my first post so apologies for any bad etiquette! I have been using Inkscape to crop pdf's of graphs for a report I'm writing. This involves importing the A4 pdf page, selecting the graph or figure and then fitting the document size to the selection. I then re-save as a pdf via Cairo, which has been working really well! Nice, sharp correctly sized graphs. However, I've noticed that bold text (axis titles) un-bolds after saving, any ideas on how to stop this? I've tried importing at high precision, but no luck. Also there's a drop down box that specifies how text it handled, but I only have the option to "import as text". Thanks in advance! Alex

A solution would be to convert every text to paths, wich increases the size of the file but renders correctly. Maybe some of them will have to be rolled back to the previous version (the title part) if we'll stick with the text not converted to curves. -Tweaked the bridge. A lot. I'm a long-time Inkscape user, and we use it in the production of many of our books. The UKUUG (the UK's Unix and open systems User Group) runs two technical conferences a year. This summer, the group wants to get as many different free software projects involved as possible. The venue is already booked and most of the arrangements are made, so adding extra tracks or mini-confs is easy. Possible Inkscape-related ideas: - an Inkscape developers summit. We can provide a dedicated meeting room. - a separate "mini-conf" running alongside the UKUUG conference. - an InkScape track within the main conference. - a "Getting started with Inkscape" tutorial for newbies, or an advanced tutorial? Hi SVG Open organizers and Inkscape users, As per the voting on doodle (http://doodle.com/g6q8szftsz3cnrg5) it seems like most people prefer the Golden gate theme. I personally prefered the "Mountain/Sun" scheme, but I think the bridge theme is nice as well and we should now continue to improve it. Thank you all of the involved Inkscape and SVG Open people for your contributions and congratulations to Jozef for winning the voting. The latest version (with some minor improvements, thanks Frank!) can be found at http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/255376/20092803_01_svgopen2009v3b.svg Things that should be changed: * The text on the bottom/right should be changed to "Mountain View CA, USA, Oct. 2-4 2009" - not that it is "Mountain View" (two words) and we should more clearly indicate that it is located in the US. If we use an abbreviation for October than it should still fit * Export into plain SVG * Cleanup of the code (size reduction) * Test if the text/fonts render correctly in all systems and browsers * Make sure it renders correctly in all browsers (currently the hills render as black in my Opera on Linux for some reason? Gradient or filter problem?) * potentially add some SMIL (e.g. moving clouds) for smil-enabled browsers (please do it subtile) * Make a PNG version for IE Any volunteers to do the cleanup? Open Clip Art Library Release 0.19 Announcement and OCAL10K Goal Exceeeded

March 31, 2009 - Release 0.19 of Open Clip Art Library (http://www.openclipart.org), containing over 12,000 high quality scalable vector graphics (SVG) files released into the public domain by over a 1000 artists, is now available for download and use. In celebration of this accomplishment, since OCAL��s last release happened in 2005, and March being 5th anniversary of the Open Clip Art Library (OCAL), the OCAL community set a goal to achieve 10,000 uploaded pieces of vector graphics. The project achieved this with the 10,000th submission from user Boobaloo who uploaded a graphic of an onion. The project congratulates Boobaloo for uploading the 10,000th upload. Also, project congratulates all artists who have uploaded in this anniversary OCAL10K sprint. The project congratulates Nicu who personally crossed the 500 clip art upload barrier and now has 696 pieces of clip art uploaded to the system. All efforts towards the OCAL10K goal helped boost the site��s registrations and focus on releasing monthly packages once more to make this project a flowing river of clip art uploads. Since all contributions to the project are released into the public domain via the Creative Commons Public Domain Dedication, anyone may use the Open Clip Art Library files for any use including collections, to make money, and to generate compositions. However, the community encourages anyone who uses the clip art to provide attribution back to the original clip art in the form of a link or to announce the use of the clip art in some form. It looked very good but, in my opinion, had some minor defects (like some overlappings that could be avoided, some elements too close or too big and things like that. Release of JessyInk 1.0.0!

Dear all, after some time in beta, heavy testing and a lot of very helpful feedback from the community, I am glad to be able to release version 1.0 of JessyInk today. I consider this to be the first feature complete and stable release and I hope you'll have fun playing with it. It is available for download either from launchpad (https:// launchpad.net/jessyink) or from GoogleCode (http://code.google.com/p/ jessyink/). JessyInk is a JavaScript that can be integrated into an Inkscape SVG image. When loading the image in a browser, JessyInk turns every layer of the image into a slide of a presentation. Using the JessyInk extensions, different transitions, effects and auto-texts (such as slide numbers) can be assigned. Other features of JessyInk include an index sheet mode and support for a master slide.
