I committed the patch by Jasper which implements a faster blur algorithm, so now the Gaussian blur must be noticeably faster in the SVN trunk. Everyone using gaussian blur, please test the new code with regard to: - any especially bad artefacts? (as before, lowering quality in Preferences > Filters introduces some artefacts, but they look reasonable, I think even nicer than with the old algorithm) - how much faster it is on your images? (test on different zooms and with export; we need some estimates to put into the release notes) - is the range of quality/speed settings adequate? or would you like to have a still faster/lower quality step? - any other problems? -- bulia byak Inkscape. Help with the

I'm currently using this great extension (yes, it does work fine for me on both the development and stable versions, on a Windows XP machine). It's great for exporting a large amount of icons from a single file - I used to have to export from inkscape to photoshop to break a single file into slices, but now I can skip that, which is a great help. Now the way I work with it, is like this: I'm creating a grid of icons on a single file. So, I open a new layer and name it "slices". On it I draw 16x16 pixel rectangles and give them appropriate icon names. now on the layers dialog I lock this layer and change its opacity to 0%, and I'm free to draw anything I want on a layer above that. Just before export I group all the stuff on the top layer, so when I run the extension I get PNG files for all my icons plus one large file with all of them at once, which I can delete. So it's all well but I was wondering if there was any way I could edit the python script so it would only look for objects on a single layer named "slices". I'm not looking into any fancy change in dialog, I was just wondering if a quick hack of the python script could do that. I'm not a programmer, but I do have some background in scripting, so I tried to look a the script and the correct place seems to be the for loop at the end, but I'll be damned if I know what to put in there to make it do what I want. So, if anyone can help me and it's not too much of a bother, I'd be really hankful!

Baffling UI

I've been trying to use Inkscape but its UI seems designed to foil attempts. Specifically when I select the rectangle drawing tool and create a shape by dragging I get one width a dashed contour that vanishes as soon as I click anywhere on the pane. There does not seem to be any way to make it stick and thus to actually get a rectangle. How dumb is that? If you need assistance just to draw a rectangle, never mind more advanced operation, something's really wrong with the UI. Likewise the need to use a CTRL modifier for the arrow keys to work runs counter to th expectations developed in users by every other software I can think of and is inconvenient to boot. -- O.L.

I wanted to switch the vertical ruler to show the lowest number at top but there was no such option. For things like layouting a business letter this is the better way because the definition of a business letter begins at the top of the page. Dennis

I have found out how to link shapes for flowtext. However, it seems that I have to re-connect all shapes if I want to include or append another one. Is there an easier way except the XML-editor (if that's easier at all)? Dennis

Can't do 2 simple things

Inkscape Users, I've climbed up and down the interface, help files, and the web, and I can't find out how to do these two simple tasks: 1. Unhide objects. When one selects "Object->Properties", one can select a check box to "hide" the object. But, once hidden, the object is no longer selectable, and nowhere is there a general "unhide all" option, or any other option to get access to hidden objects. It's almost like I've deleted them, except I can't even get them visible again with "undo". How do I unhide objects? 2. Put text along a Path. Sure, I know I can go to "Text-> Put On Path", but nothing happens when I do. I select the text first, then the path. I select the path first, then the text. I put the text below the path, above the path, I group them, I ungroup them... how does one actually get the text onto the path? troublesome flowtext

Hello I read in the docs that flowtext boxes can be linked so that text flows from one box into another. However, the docs do not show how that works and I couldn't find out. Could please somebody tell me how to do that? If I create an empty second text box for the text to be flowed in from the first text box, after clicking into the first text box, the second text box is gone. How can I create text boxes that stay even if the are empty. This is also important for creating templates. There seems to be no option for defining pages. A page could be just a layer that blends out all layers below it and all layers above the next page (including it). This would be a nice feature because switching from page to page wouldn't mean turning off visibility for one text layer and turning on visibility for the next layer to work with. Fiddling with the text boxes is quite annoying. One has to click exactly on the letters to get the box. Also, if there are empty lines below the text--possibly to copy in some part from somewhere else-- there is no way to directly get back to there after having clicked into another text box. Selecting some text is annoying too. The tool doesn't behave well --especially when selecting from the end upwards. However, the last line seems to be hardly recognized when selecting text. A select tool only for text (an arrow with an A at the right) would be nice to help using inkscape like a text layout tool or a word processor. This tool should always highlight all textboxes for the quick overview of the page layout and allow the user to click into a text box anywhere where text or free spaces are given. If one clicks outside the given text in the box, the cursor should find the nearest position at the text automatically. When two boxes overlap, the highest is chosen. When the text selection tool is used, inkscape interprets a text box as opaque because overlayed text boxes are of no use in text layout mode and transparent boxes would have to pass clicks through instead of the behaviour written above. PDF -> pstoedit -> SVG -> Inkscape scaling problem

People, I quite frequently need to convert PDFs into something convenient to edit and SVG + Inkscape is the obvious choice. I use pstoedit with either the plot-svg output or the shareware svg output but in either case the output of converting a US letter file seems to be scaled down to 80% when opened in Inkscape. Of course the page can be dragged up to the correct size again but it would be better not to have to do this. >From the pstoedit developer: "I did some investigations and it looks like this scaling issue is caused by different interpretations of the numbers in the SVG file. Somewhere I read that Inkscape has an internal factor of 0.8 "Inkscape pixels" per "Point". I have not found out yet, what pstoedit could generate so inkscape interpretes the numbers as Points (except maybe adding a pt to every coordinate - but that would blow up the SVG file a lot). Is there anyone who can shed some light on this? Installing Inkscape on new Macbook

Hello, I just purchased a new Macbook and have installed the Universal platform version but when I open the application I get an error message saying that I need X11 to run Inkscape. When I installed X 11 from the Apple website, I get another message saying my computer has a more recent version of this software already installed. I used Inkscape on my Dell PC and I hate to give it up now that I've switched to Mac! I'm desparate to get my Inkscape back! Any advice? Thanks!!

It helps A LOT when users file bugs for problems they experience and it will make it easier for us to notify you when a fix happens. You also seem to be holding on to the idea that this problem is somehow related to the fact that you downloaded a zip archive rather than an installer. This is completely unrelated. Boolean-Operation Difference

I have an SVG from Wikipedia that I am trying to simplify down to a single path. Everything has gone well until I get to the last step. The symbol is the ancient symbol of Maurya, and on the base of the statue there are some cutouts in the shape of a horse and elephant. The artist decided to model this by drawing a horse and elephant in a light color rather than cutting a hole in the base. No problem, I thought. Just select the two paths and take the difference. Unfortunately, the cutouts are relying on a black stroke of 3. So when I take the difference, it doesn't look much like what it did before. extensions still don't work

I installed 0.45 (just unpacked the .zip file) and was hoping to be able to use the 'groups to pngs' script now, but always get an error when running it. (the error message ends with: File "C:\Python24\Lib\site-packages\_xmlplus\sax\xmlreader.py", line 121, in parse buffer = file.read(self._bufsize) IOError: [Errno 9] Bad file descriptor I understand the effects are is dependent on python installation or something, but I can't get it working. In the readme file there is something about extension-dependencies, but it's way over my head, I really don't see what I need to do from that text. Is there any way for a simple non-technical graphics-program-user to just install inscape and get the extensions working on a windows-machine? -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Copying a few nodes from an object

Is it possible to copy nodes from an object with the 'Edit Node' tool and paste them? I've tried copying just a few nodes from an object, hit copy, and then paste. Nothing happens. Duplicating the whole object and altering the duplicate works fine, but it would save me some time if I can copy and paste nodes if it's possilble. Any hints would be helpful! Line smoothing

Inkscape users, I'm currently trying to find the best Linux/Open Source application for the task of "digital inking". For those not familiar with the term, digital inking is simply tracing over scanned images of pencil art to create a clean image for printing, and possibly colouring. The make or break issue seems to be one of line smoothing. At first I thought that drawing smooth freehand lines was an issue with the Wacom tablet drivers (Linuxwacom), but it seems after some reading it is an application issue. GIMP does not support line smoothing (so far as I can tell). On the LinuxWacom mailing list, someone suggested that Inkscape might have some line smoothing functions. I've actually been using Inkscape for a while now on other tasks, so I'm not unfamiliar with the interface. However, I can't find any line smoothing options. Do they exist? If so, where? Using a vector graphic program for this task, in place of a raster graphics program like GIMP, would not be my first choice, but if I could draw smooth lines in Inkscape, I would happily go with it. Reading the press release, it makes feel like reading a press release of a new Formula 1 race car: evolutionary not revolutionary. It has lots of improvements which makes other programs seem old. They may have all the tools but Inkscape provides the speed and better UI. I am actually more productive with Inkscape! Again congratulations! Bryce and I were of the opinion that cutting the release early was important to get Inkscape 0.45 into the upcoming linux distros. The packaging problems are a bit frustrating and embarrassing but I think our priorities are in the right place. A few days to wait for packages versus 6 or more months to get into a distro release. You make excellent points. This has been the practice in the past and should be in the future. This entire cycle was week with regard to packaging. I dropped the ball on the autopackages early on. The mac packages stalled for a long time because of difficulties updating the build to sufficiently new libs. And most recently some bad management on my part allowed us to lose touch with Adib at a critical moment. I think we're over most of these hurdles now and we can start looking for ways to prevent such situations in the future. My first suggestion is redundancy among packagers. Packaging teams should help to increase our buss number. Community members, if you have even a remote interest in packaging please step forward. Aaron Spike

Getting basic fonts to show up correctly

A newbie here trying to understand fonts in Inkscape on Mac OS X (10.4.6): Basic fonts like Arial, Georgia, and Verdana are not showing up with their entire families in the Text and Font box. Arial, for example, doesn't show up, but 'Arial Black', 'Arial Hebrew', 'Arial Narrow', and 'Arial Rounded MT Bold' does. In another example, Georgia does show up, but its other family members, such as italic, bold, and bold italic, are not present. Anyone have tips on solving this issue? The Export Groups to PNG extension

The export to PNg extension is great for that - but I'd like to know if there is a way to limit the export to only part of the groups in the file, say only the selected ones or only on a single layer. cheers, Michael

About Screen in 0.45pre1

I am running the prerelease from yesterday, and it looks pretty good. One minor thing is the about screen is not quite right. The text "Inkscape 0.45" does not appear in the same font (since I probably don't have the same font as the designer). Turning it into a shape would fix this. Also the glow under the second ball back cuts off where it should fade nicely. (See attachment) Good luck on release. -axiom

Definition of divergence in sprial tool?

I am trying to create logarithmic spirals for illustrating many of the spirals in nature, but I am having a hard time translating from the "divergence" to any meaningful factor used to specify the spiral. If Divergence =1 it expands in equal increments, but what is the definition of Divergence = 2 or any other amount? I was hoping it would produce a logarithmic spiral (increasing by the same factor for each turn), but from measurements this does not appear to be the case. Any insight on this? By the way, if the spiral with divergence >1 is NOT a logarithmic spiral, that feature should be added. In a logarithmic spiral the angle between the radius and the tangent line at any point on the spiral is a constant. It can be specified mathematically as r = a*e^(k*theta). Unfortunately, no matter how many people come to a consensus, the "one right thing" will not appeal to everyone, and assuming that there is any one way to go about a task makes the inkscape UI seem a little authoritarian. The effect is an arrogant sort of "This way is better, and you need to adjust the way you do things from however you did it before, because THIS is how it is in inkscape." This does not strike me as typical FLOSS behaviour, and even if the motive behind the above quoted notion isn't arrogance, it comes off as such. IMHO, idea that "having many ways of doing the same tasks" is for experts is flawed. An expert would have worked out the most efficient way to carry out a task and then stuck to that. The point of having many ways to do something would be to cater to users at every level. effects don't work in 0.45pre2

I installed inkscape 0.45pre2 using the Windows installer. Some of the effects don't work. Most useful to me would be the "export/groups to pngs" script. If I run it I get an error message (see below). what direction for UI

I hope that I am not out of place adding my thoughts on the UI. I started using CAD/CAM almost thirty years ago, when my father was an early developer of training programs. I am an accomplished draftsman, but, I can go for long periods without using a program (I still use hand drawing a lot), and find I need to reacquaint myself with the UI. JiHO, I think has a very good idea, with the ability to select from user profiles. Bulia's ideas about templates are also very excellent, I wish I was able to work on that one, but I can't. This may be out of place, but, my 'best of wish' would be specific to Mac; I would love to see a multiple user profiles (prewritten and customised) along with a start-up script available from a dashboard widget. You know, it occurs to me that the status messages and the layer dropdown may cater to different crowds. Being able to read the status messages clearly is something novice users need the most. The layer dropdown is something experienced users are after. Of course, there is some overlap (novice users needing layers will spot the layer dropdown first, and even experienced users will find info in the status bar of use from time to time). But this makes me wonder if the status bar could benefit from some sort of adaptive ui behavior or perhaps just a configuration setting? For new users, the layer dropdown (among other things) could initially just be scary clutter, so clearing off the status bar in favor of status messages could make the application >look< a lot more approachable. Then, later once they've gotten more comfortable, they could graduate into expert mode and have these extra accessories turned on. This may also fit in with a more mode-oriented usage model that we've discussed previously in the context of technical drawing vs. artistic drawing needs, which shows up in areas like snapping and so forth. The layer dropdown is not a good example here since both technical and artistic drawers need that, but a better example might be a symbol pallete (very important for tech drawing, but not so much for artists), vs. the color pallete (important for art, less so for tech). A framework that allowed the UI to adapt to different user modes could prove handy for a lot of different purposes. Another example would be a "child-oriented mode" where the UI is simplified to basic drawing options. Ideally, we would be able to come up with a single design that suits all needs (e.g. moving it into the canvas), and it is very wise to always make that the top goal, since the fewer configuration options, the easier the software will be to test and maintain. Well, it depends on how you look at the project's goals. Certainly, our most important audience is users who contribute back to the project, and as such it's true that these users will be spending enough time with the project to get over small usability issues such as UI clutter. (Remember, every Inkscape user was a novice at one time.) However, Inkscape also has the goal of being a member of the larger open source community, and I think this involves embracing some of the more occasional style usages, such as if someone just needs to knock out a quick flyer for their club, or make a gift card for a relative. It would be a great sign of success if Inkscape were the only 2D drawing program required to be on the open source desktop. Bryce

Converting Type to Shapes

Hi! I've been using Inkscape to do some typographic designs, and I can use the text tool to make a single charachter and then use the "Object To Path" command on the Path Menu (CTRL SHIFT C) to convert it into an editable shape I can control with the node editor, and make its bounding box fit tightly around the shape so I can use the Align and Distribute palette to place it just right. However, when I write a line of text, I'd like to use "Object To Path" to convert the text into a group of objects, which I can then ungroup and rearrange using Align and Distribute. When I do this at the moment, all the letters appear to be one object. Any tips? :-) -- Regards, Dave

Bounding boxes and patterns, cloning, etc...

Greetings! I am a long time Freehand user (still using Fh8 on the mac) and I am trying to switch to Inkscape. I playing with it for a few hours last weekend and I have a few questions. FH8 used to have 'replicate' and used to remember the offset of duplicate options so one could easily duplicate a set of things over and over. For example, if I wanted to build a grid, I could draw a line then duplicate it once placing it in the right place then hit the duplicate key over and over. I've been trying this with patterns and cloning and I have problems with bounding boxes. It looks like the tiling wants to tile base on bounding box, but the box is outside of the actual area by some amount like the size of miters, or lines or soemthing. i.e. The bounding box doesn't bound to the node points, but to the line. This makes it impossible (as far as I can tell) to make a pinstripe pattern. Anyone encountered things like this before? I'm using Inkscape 0.44. Thanks for any help! -Andrew

scaling geometry but not Stroke

I find it hard to create a collection of shapes that are different sizes, yet have the same thickness of line. Currently I create shapes with the tools on the left, such as a circle. when I am done creating a circle I find that if I want to make it a little smaller (reduce diameter), the thickness of the line is also reduced when the circle is modified by the provided handles. Is there a UI feature I am missing that will allow me to change the size and shape of a object, without changing it's line size? thanks for fun app. I apprieciate any help! -Lucas

Setting locale

I'm using Inkscape on a Windows XP with the locale set to hebrew (israel). I've had no problems until now but I just downloaded a development snapshot (the new gradient tool rock! and windows stay on top!) and now the entire UI has switched to a right-to-left UI with bits and pieces of hebrew stuck here and there. I remember GTK was supposed to respect a language setting in the enviroment variables - if you added LANG=en it would ignore the system setting on Gimp. But this didn't work for Inkscape when I tried it. So, is there any way to make inkscape ignore the windows set locale?

"union" for single shapes?

Is there a command to eliminate overlaps in paths (especially calligraphy paths), i.e. to create a path that is just the outside of a particular path? I can sort-of achieve this effect by drawing an overlapping path and unioning the two, but I would like to be able to do this without the extra 'helper' path. -- Mathew (sorry, .sig file is on the other computer)

Hi, Just tried the new inkscape-0.45pre1.x86.package that is advertised on www.inkscape.org. I am getting these errors when trying to launch: [mimooh@...1459... ~]$ inkscape inkscape: /lib/libgcc_s.so.1: version `GCC_3.4' not found (required by inkscape) inkscape: /usr/bin/../lib/libpng12.so.0: no version information available (required by inkscape) The GCC_3.4 one seems to be fatal - inkscape won't launch. This is my configuration: [root@...1459... ~]# rpm -qa | grep gcc libgcc-3.3.6-4 gcc-dirs-1.0-2 gcc-3.3.6-4 gcc-c++-3.3.6-4 [root@...1459... ~]# rpm -ql libgcc /lib/libgcc_s.so.1 I would say I use a rather fresh distro (PLD Linux) and I just upgraded libgcc package. Hi, First, I'm a new and very impressed user of Inkscape. I'm no drawing application expert (far from it), but to me it seems that a lot of careful and creative thinking has gone into designing the user interface, and the result is very enabling. An issue has arisen that I bet has been asked before; if so, my apologies (I did search for it). My daughter and I are are using Inkscape to try drawing a new set of icons for an open-source educational game (Tuxmath). These icons contain a number of distinct objects (penguins, igloos) that can be mixed-and-matched, and the individual ingredients can change (the penguin can flap its wings, part of the igloo can melt, etc.) We're now to the stage where we're trying to combine these ingredients into whole icons; however, we're noticing that as we improve as artists we'd like to, for example, go back and fix up our igloo a bit more---but then we find ourselves making the same changes (or delete, copy, paste) in all the "derived" files that use the igloo + other ingredients. I'd like to find out if there's a way that these improvements can be propagated to all of our combined icons without having to manually copy-and-paste. Basically, is there a way to embed an object as a link? And then have future edits build from there?
