Getting good fill for extracted paths

Hi - first time poster here. I'm relatively new to SVG and I'm having a little trouble. :) I'm multi-selecting and copying paths from the world map I've downloaded from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:BlankMap-World.svg . Each path seems to be separate, hence the multi-select. Then I paste the selected paths (say for Spain) and try to combine them. They appear to be combined, but I'm unable to get a proper interior fill on the resulting object. That is it seems the fill is still acting on individual paths. I've tried joining selected segments, grouping, everything I can think of, but to no avail. If you look at the small attached example, you'll see what I mean! I'm sure from that you'll see what I'm trying to do. Maybe it's something simple, but I'm baffled. Any help would be gratefully received. Cheers, Brendan Quigley

resolution issues

Hi Inkscapers! I am fairly new to Inkskape and experiencing some difficulties with the way it handles units and resolution. I use IS to create graphics for web sites, so I have "Default export resolution" in Inkskape Preferences set to 72px. At first I always set my document units to pixels, but then I noticed that the exported bitmaps turned out to be smaller — pixel-wise that is. So I took to using points as document units after discovering that this resulted in the expected export sizes. Problem is, when I import a bitmap it turns out to be smaller in Inkskape… What is one to do? Is there a way to set the document resolution? Thanks in advance! Sebastian

Help required with "put on path" - text orientation within a circle

I am trying to put text into a circle with the "put on path" command Problem I am having, is the orientation of the text. I have two areas of text, one text line I want to put on the top of the circle but inside of the circle, with the text orientated upwards. The second line is to go on the lower portion of the circle (again inside), again with text orientated upwards. I created both lines separately. When I put the first line on, it aligns to the outside of the circle, is there any way of selection so that it will align to the inside of the circle, which just saves the step of resizing the text to fit the inner portion of the circle. My real problem is with the 2nd line. It also will align itself to the outside of the circle. When I rotate the text to the bottom of the circle, it ends up upside down (or facing downwards) rather then upwards which I require. I tried inverting the text horizontally before using put on path command, but it looks like the that formatting is eliminated when the line is fitted to the circle as the result is the same. Any assistance you can provide this novice with Inkscape would be appreciated. Regards Bill Kerr

Hi all I'm using Inkscape on Linux, specially Tomahawk Desktop ( http://www.tomahawkcomputers.com/ ). How do I print my artworks on an inkjet printer? I use Epson Stylus Photo R800. Is printing possible in first place? How do inkscape users print artworks? The gimp-print ( http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/ ) ver. 5.0 is coming soon. Can the gimp-print now known as Gutenprint be used to print Inkscape artworks? I'm really interested printing artworks on Epson Stylus Pro series printers. Hi all, I've been making a lot of graphs lately, and have found Inkscape quite useful for prettying them up. I stuck a couple screenshots on the website: http://inkscape.osuosl.org/screenshots/svg_tt_graph_bar_before.png http://inkscape.osuosl.org/screenshots/svg_tt_graph_bar_after.png The first is the raw graph produced by the SVG::TT::Graph::Bar module from CPAN. This is a handy module but it doesn't give as much control over appearance as I wished... But in Inkscape I tinkered with it a good bit, and got the latter. I made good use of the grid, paste in place, and layers for this. Took about 20 min total. Bryce

Major Issue

I posted to the list before about this, but I guess I wasn't specific enough. However has anyone else but me noticed that Export to Bitmap doesn't really work? It seems to particularly break when you use gradients with additional interpolation points at arbitrary offsets. I find this particularly amazing since obviously the program is able to rasterize to screen, however it seems incapable of redirecting this same output to a memory buffer than PNGing it. How is Inkscape going to print my drawing correctly if it can't even render it to a bitmap? I only ask this because I am making a poster, and it costs a good amount of money to print one of these suckers, I'd like to make sure that I'm going to get what I expect first. Does anyone have any idea of what is going on? I'd really appreciate any light that can be shed on the matter, thanks! -- Rick necro351@...155...

error with pdf: a resource is missing

Hello all, I'm using inkscape to create some pdf pictures to include in my latex documents. When I use some figures from openclipart in my documents, for example, people/people_juliane_krug_08c.svg I receive the following message from acroread: "A resource is missing". I've never seen this problem before. Does anybody have any idea? I downloaded the stable tarball to my Slackware system and immediately ran into compile problems. So on a hunch I downloaded Inkscape-current and it compiled like a champ. I had previously downloaded/installed the Freerock gnome package. Slack no longer contains Gnome. BTW it still doesn't work: --------------------------------------- *** glibc detected *** free(): invalid pointer: 0x0865ebc0 *** Emergency save activated! Emergency save completed. Inkscape will close now. If you can reproduce this crash, please file a bug at www.inkscape.org with a detailed description of the steps leading to the crash, so we can fix it. ----------------------------------------- I am thinking of adding another partition just to get a working Inkscape. When incorporating an Inkscape drawing in a printable document wihich will be in pdf form, is the best choice to save the drawing also as pdf? BUG in coordinate system (v0.44)

Hi, I'm quite new to Inkscape but I the coordinate system handling is not getting clear to me, and I believe there must be a bug. global unit system and transformation

Hi all, I've just started to use inkscape a few days ago to draw a map. But for this I would like to have a user defined coordinate system as my country outline is in "degree". It would be really nice if I could use the geographic grid (ie. for adding point symbols at 19°N, 101°E). But I would need to set somewhere a global transformation to map that system onto the drawing area: 1° equals 3cm on paper, and the origin of the paper =18°N,99E for example. Perhaps something like that is already included and I only couldn't find it? Thanks Wolfgang

import svg file by reference

When I import a jpg or png, the svg file contains an external reference to that file. When I import an svg, the file is merged inline. Is there a way to tell inkscape to import the svg by reference instead? I'd like to be able to edit several sub files independent of a master file. -- Chris Bare chris@...1958...

save as PDF loses jpegs & bitmaps

I upgraded to 0.44 (using svn) for the enhanced transparency handling but - altho' I do get vector graphics retaining their transparency when saving to PDF - I am now losing all .png .jpg and bitmaps. They don't show up at all. ldd /bin/inkscape shows that all dependencies are met on my Ubuntu Dapper box running kernel 2.6.15. Am I missing something simple or is this a bug?

Coordinates all different

All, I just created a document using inkscape to layout objects of which I known the position in real space. Because some of these positions are negative, I specified an offset in the origin of the grid so that the grid point (0,0) is not the bottom left corner of the document. So far so good. Once the whole layout has been created, I now would like to know the position of other objects on there (middle points and such). This position is given by the rulers although at the precision of the reading of the ruler. However, the other ways of getting positions (little box at the bottom right of the application window or boxes in one of the toolbars) give the position in the document's references ((0,0) at bottom left), not in the grid's. Did I miss anything or is that a bug (or a feature that could possibly be configurable to offer alternatives)? Cheers, Fred

problem with PUA characters

I'm having a bizarre problem in 0.44 with text objects containing characters from the PUA -- specifically, Klingon glyphs -- and I thought I'd check here to make sure I'm not doing anything stupid before submitting a bug report. I have a sequence of Klingon characters, in the range f8d0 to f8ff, and they aren't displaying. The font I'm using (clearlyU; it is in Debian) has glyphs for these characters. I know this because they show up in Vim with guifont set appropriately, and also in gucharmap. I know that Inkscape has the right characters in the text object, because when I look at the 'text' tab of the 'text and font' dialogue box, it shows the right numbers. I know the object should be visible, because when I type normal characters in they show up. Despite all this, the Klingon characters don't show up in the font preview area in the 'text and font' dialogue box, nor in the document itself. Any hints? Has this been seen before? Missing german tutorials?

The User-interface is perfect in german-language, but under Help/Tutorials there are some files missing: /usr/local/share/inkscape/tutorials/tutorial-shapes.de.svg /usr/local/share/inkscape/tutorials/tutorial-advanced.svg (is present, but not in a german version) /usr/local/share/inkscape/tutorials/tutorial-calligraphy.de.svg /usr/local/share/inkscape/tutorials/tutorial-elements.de.svg /usr/local/share/inkscape/tutorials/tutorial-tips.de.svg Am I right that there are no translations of that files into german? If so: 1.) Should I translate them? 2.) In the meantime, wouldn't it a good idea to link to the english ones instead of producing an error? Is there a way to set up the latest version of Inkscape with all the libraries it needs on a distribution that doesn't yet support Cairo without upgrading to Cairo system-wide? Xandros 4 doesn't support Cairo, and you can't install Cairo without nuking all the Xandros-specific stuff. I'm running Inkscape just fine on my Kubuntu machine but would like to run it on my Xandros machine as well... ... so does anyone know if it's possible to set up an environment *with* Cairo that Inkscape can use without nuking the standard environment that doesn't know what to do with it? Inkscape performance issues

Hello, I am trying to use Inkscape 0.44 to design basic graphics for websites (think content boxes, buttons, titles and so on) and to get highlight and shadow borders around them I make use of linked offsets, which I find very useful especially when I need to adjust the basic shape (from which the linked offsets are made) later on. Unfortunately, using linked offsets seems to have a very detrimental effect on performance, in my example file [1], I have just a few content boxes and a single button with a small icon on it, yet certain basic actions like creating a new shape, hiding/unhiding/moving layers or shape adjustments are starting to take a lot of time. On my desktop machine, which has an AMD Athlon 64 3500+ CPU, hiding the "Buttons" layer causes Inkscape to use 100% CPU and become unresponsive for a good 8 seconds. Considering that I need many more buttons and boxes and thus vastly increasing the amount of linked offsets, I am wondering wether there are other ways of creating buttons and boxes like these without linked offsets while retaining the same kind of flexibility or if there is some other way I can work like this but with better performance. + I use debian Sarge... it comes with Inkscape .41... .44 wont load with what I have, and most of the new dependencies aren't on my CD set... so... how to proceed ? Is there, for instance, a way to get all the required libraries together for an Inkscape .44 upgrade ? I guess it would be easy enough to just download all the separate dependency files... the debian site has links to all of them... but, can I just install these newer packages side by side with the older ones I have ? Hi everyone. I've had a thought that others may be interested in. I would like to start a forum dedicated to inkscape. A place where we can have different headings/subheadings, tutorials, screenshots, WIP, and general discussions. I wanted to see if others would be interested in making use of such a site. I would probably register under inkscapeforums.com or simmilar. I can pay for domain registration and some hosting too. But, does anyone know the overall cost for running forums per annum? Also, I don't want to tread on the feet of the Devs and everyone who started inkscape, would you guys be cool with the idea? So, give some feedback and see if we can get this thing started. Printing Conondrum

I want to print my work out now that I've finished working on it. However it seems as though every portable file format that I can take to the poster-printing place is broken with respect to something Inkscape uses in SVG, the export to bitmap seems to ignore transparencies in certain spots for some reason, the pdf export leaves out whole shapes, and cuts off other shapes, as well as distorting them too, and I don't really think post script will do better than pdf, but I haven't honestly tried that yet. Is there some way to export my SVG drawing to a portable and printable format that I can take to kinko's? -- Rick necro351@...155...

Problem with gradients

Hi all, I'm learning to use Inkscape, and have found my first 'real' problem. I made something with inkscape that has a color gradient in it, but when I save it as eps or pdf file, the gradient is not present and I see only a full color. I searched the net for posts and documentation, but I could only find a note on inkscape 0.42 saying that it supports eps gradients. I have 0.43, so where's the problem? save as pdf: acrobat - a number value is out of range

Hello guys, I'm having a problem to save a figure as .pdf. I tried to reduce the number of objects of my original figure to figure out where is the error. So if a simply create a new file and import the object computer/server_olivier_boyer_01.svg from openclipart, after I save this file, when I open my Acrobat 7.0.1 I receive the message "a number value is out of range". Has anybody had this problem? I don't know if there is something special in the "server_oliver_boyer_01.svg" file. Please, any help is very welcome. (I'm using inkscape 0.44.) Instead of the confusing toggle button, now the Controls bar for the Dropper tool has two checkboxes, "Pick alpha" and "Set alpha", which work as follows. Suppose you have an object selected and, using Dropper, click on an object which has red (#FF0000) fill and 0.5 opacity (half-transparent). - If the "Pick alpha" checkbox is off, the selected object will get the fill color #800000 (i.e. faded-out red) and fill opacity will be at 1.0 (opaque). - If the "Pick alpha" checkbox is on but "Set alpha" is off, the selected object will get the fill color #FF0000 (red) and fill opacity will be at 1.0. - If both "Pick alpha" and "Set alpha" are on, the selected object will get the fill color #FF0000 (red) and fill opacity will be at 0.5 (half-transparent). If you Shift+click instead of click, the same changes will be made to stroke color and stroke opacity, correspondingly. Note that in no situation can Dropper change the master opacity of the selected object(s), although it can pick it just as it does any other kind of opacity. -- bulia byak Inkscape. Hi, I'm trying to print a file created with Incscape (Inkscape 0.43+devel, built May 31 2006) but I can't get it to take in account the transparency, either in direct printing, pdf export (or ps either). I know I can export in bitmap, but sadly my printer has only 2m of memory and I can't print big bitmap files. Does anyone has a solution (possibly involving another program to print the svg)?

Hi folks ! I noticed that the list of fonts into Inkscape is different that in the other software. I use the font think to manage my fonts. I installed some new fonts and unistalled others. They are usable or not on all software and not into Inkscape. any ideas ? one of them is ZAFCHAB.TTF (the attached file) R.

can't find a function

Hi, in Inkscape 0.44 I'm missing a function, that I often used in version 0.43: when I'm tracing a bitmap, I get a lot of little 1-node-colorpatches. In 0.43 I selected one of this nodes, deleated it, and all the other 1-node-colorpatches were gone too. See: http://www.hagoschaos.de/test/test.html This was very helpful. Surprise, just installed .44, Jun 26 2006 build, using yum on my AMD FC5 box. Question: What does the subject effects do on objects, type, vectors, bit maps? The only thing that happens when I use either Blur or Extrude is overlays over the original. Am I missing something? What's the story here? Thanks. frank
