Dear people, first off all I have to say that I'M NOT A WINDOWS USER. After, my boss, that is a windows user, would like to use inkscape. We have tried to install it and basically we didn't have any problem. The question is that we would like to know which dependencies needs inkscape to run in windows, because we cannot use any import feature. So, we cannot open any ps, eps, etc file. We have tried to install python and perl, (without any success, or the import feature doesn't work four us), but I have to say that I don't know very much the windows platform (I'm very happy with the apt-get ;-) So, please, could you tell me which software is necessary/recommend to run a full inkscape in the Win platform? Nodes

I have a couple of questions/suggestions about nodes. 1. Is it possible to insert new nodes on a path, kind of a 'reverse simplify', preferably "insert new node at cursor position". 2. I would like to create shapes that exactly match other shapes, at least in part. This would involve duplicating nodes from other shapes. Currently this can be done with many steps, such as duplicating the other shape, creating a new shape that overlaps it, and using a boolean operation to cut away the new shape so that it matches the edge of the other shape. I could do this a lot easier if I could just select a node on the current image and get Inkscape to make it exactly match the closest node on the adjacent object. A few iterations of the above option (add a node near the cursor) and this option (snap current node to nearest node) would give me what I want. 3. With the Node Editing tool selected, is there a way of selecting the next or previous object? Ideally I'd like a keyboard shortcut for this. I know the concept of "next" and "previous" object is not very strong, so something similar such as being able to bind a keyboard shortcut to selecting a particular object would do, so I could bind, say, Shift-1 and Shift-2 to the two objects and switch selection between them this way. Vectorize option

Hi, I have seen that in Flash MX by Macromedia, there's a nice option, they take a bitmap photo and they "vectorize" transforming it in a group of vectorial spots. I wanted to know if there is a similar option in Inkscape :) PS: The problem with the font cache was resolved by formatting the iBook and reinstalling X11. :| Tommaso

Can't import postscript

Hi, I am a completely new user and I installed inkscape mainly to manipulate postscript files. The installation was done with inkscape-0.42.2.x86.package on suse 9.0. My problem is that I can't seem to be able to import .ps files doing "File -> Import " and setting the filter to "All files". Inkscape tells me that it is unable to load the (.ps) file I choose. Here are the error messages I get : - when starting inkscape inkscape: /usr/bin/../lib/libpng12.so.0: no version information available (required by inkscape) although pkg-config and libpng12-config are able to find a version : >pkg-config --modversion libpng12 1.2.5 >libpng12-config --version 1.2.5 - when trying to import a ps file /[...]/blah.ps:1: parser error : Start tag expected, '<' not found %!PS-Adobe-2.0 EPSF-1.2 ^ Any help would be greatly appreciated. Sorry, I'm really dazed !! Hi people, thanks to your helps I tried again the steps Phil noticed me. I saw that after the assigning of a new Pattern to fill the shape, Inkscape shows three powerfull handsets to manage the picture. There is an handset to move the picture into the shape, one to rotate it and one to scale it. Powerfull, really powerfull, better than in many other editors (es. the heavy macromedia freehand) R.
