Perfect book cover.

I have three books on Inkscape, the third edition of "Inkscape Guide to a Vector Drawing Program", "The Book of Inkscape" and the smaller "Inkscape for Vector Graphics". None of the three mention the Render tool "Perfect Book Template" which I am reasonably certain came in with version 47 or perhaps earlier. With version 48 the barcode generator choices include two that are useful for book covers, EAN 13 and EAN 5. With these enhancements Inkscape is not yet a complete stand alone book cover tool (no CMYK, no PDF X/1-a) but it is getting close. With a little help from other free software such as Scribus the potential is exciting. I suggest that as these three books are republished the potential for creating book covers be acknowledged and the "Perfect Book Template" be at least mentioned. It more or less replaces my effort shown here: http://wexfordpress.net/template.html While my program only generates the dimensions and the guide positions as numeric output Inkscape actually creates a true template which can be saved as a pdf and used in other programs like Scribus (or even Gimp.) The workload can be split between Inkscape and Scribus in various ways. At one extreme only the template is taken from Inkscape, imported into Scribus, and the external page dimensions fitted to the imported pdf or png file. At the other extreme all of the creative work can be done in Inkscape and the finished cover imported into Scribus for conversion to CMYK and saving as PDF X/1-a where that is required or desirable. I am only beginning to experiment with these combinations. As my experience grows I'll share the results. The next edition of my e- book listed below will have both Inkscape and Scribus in the title. Right-to-left Urdu text editing

Hello everyone, my os is ubuntu karmic. im facing problems in using Inkscape for texting in Urdu. The specific problem im facing is that some alphabets are becoming distorted for example the dots of ت are shifting from the top to the bottom in some cases and also sometimes shifting to the end of the word. similar problems might be faced by users in Farsi or Arabic. any clues how to fix this?

To me, this is an excellent idea! Lots of little, nifty things like this is in my experience what helps newcomers instantly start liking Inkscape. The color boxes at the top right of the Inkscape window only opens my preferences dialog, though. I would have expected the color dialog to appear. Cheers, Jimmy Volatile. Yesterday, I led an orientation for a small group of beginners from an Native American community in the US. They all wanted Inkscape loaded on their new computers. It is a wonder-full, wonderful application. This Native American nation's (Coastal Salish) heritage and culture is loaded with arts, in particular totem-like images where Inkscape excels. These students were already making exceptional images after just a few hours. One girl did a piece with one star, Ctrl-D-ing, tweaking and arranging the copies. She was gone into the timelessness of creativity. >From the mailing list today came my discovery of F11 and F12 toggles. Simple, but functions I didn't know about or even realize I wanted. I am amazed at the quality and thoughtfulness of Inkscape. So this is a note of thanks to everyone who contributes to Inkscape. You touch lives in unimaginable ways. Carl

3D figures.

I like the availablity 3d polyhedrons. But can the aspect of these figures be changed? The truncated tetrahedron for example yields a top view. Can I get an angle view or even a side view of this 3d figure? Markers that can inherit parent attributes (e.g. marker fill takes parent stroke color so arrow heads are same color as path). 2. New gradients: A. Conical (special case of mesh?) B. Multiline text entry. 6. Perspective transforms. 7. Paths constructed of sub-paths with different attributes. Objects that share paths. (Maybe included as part of vector effects.) 8. Control over stroke positioning (amount inside/outside path). 9. Vector fills. 10. Pattern filter: Variable pattern fills (e.g. size/density of dots as function of color/alpha). 11. small screen

My laptop has a small screen, and as a result it fits in my briefcase and I can take it just about anywhere. Usually that's a feature, but not whan I use Inkscape. When I use inkscape (or the Gimp for that matter) there's very little effective drawing area because most of the screen seems to fill up with icons to do various things to my drawing. Is there any way to reduce the clutter, and to see them only when I need them? Or to usually see only the ones I use often? -- hendrik

I'm running .48 on Ubuntu and I'm a bit puzzled by the interface behaviour. some of the toolbars have moved from the top to the side of the window. Grabbing them and tearing them off works, but I can't get them to dock again. So I end up with a whole lot of free floating toolbars cluttering up the screen until I do a restart. It must be something simple - put me out of my misery please!

Using command line interface with inkscape.com 0.48 and Windows 7

I have installed Inkscape 0.48 and it runs OK in Windows 7 32 bit as a windows program. I have got the inkscape.com version from the .7z distro (wasn't in the win installer package - an omission?). But when I try to run the inkscape.com from a command window I don't get a c:\users\paul> prompt just a blank DOS window with the expected. If I type commands like --version or --help or -h they are just echoed and available with the uparrow command recall. I get the Inkscape window up that shows I have Inkscape 0.48.0 r9654. What am I doing wrong? Thanks Paul PS I have run the SVG converter GUI utility but it produces .pngs that don't view right with MS Photo viewer. Inkscape 4.8 outset/inset behavior

In trying to add a 1cm seam allowance outside a pattern drawn with Inkscape 4.8, : 1. the Outset is shaped properly, has the correct width, but it is positioned *over* the path, half in and half out, instead of being placed 100% outside of the path. Is this the intended behavior? 2. The outset doesn't inherit the properties of the path selected, it has a 'fill' by default. I have to select the edit object icon, and set fill to 'x' and stroke to solid. Is there a way to cause the 'Outset' path to inherit the selected path's properties? 3. When I select 'Inset' on the same path,just as a test to see what happens, I get a very small tight grouping of points that have no apparent relationship to my pattern shape. I don't really need 'Inset' at the moment, just thought I'd mention it. I'm new to Inkscape, so perhaps there is something that I am missing. Any suggestions? Thanks, Susan

I downloaded and installed an svn version. Is this 0.48? Post 0.48? Prior to 0.48? The splash screen still says 0.47 but this may be spurious. Attached is Outset_Test.svg The path was created with Ctrl-K. Inkscape step parameter has been set to 56.25px (5/8") The Outset results are very strange. The problem has been corrected for my drawing, but not sure about what was corrected: I selected my segments and converted them to a path with Ctrl-K, then applied Outset, with the results of an inside and outside line, both deviating from the original path in strange ways. I did more experimentation, selecting segments then converting to path, then Simplifying the path before adding Outset resulted with same inside & outside offset lines. More experimenting in this vein had similar results. Only after the object was initially created as one single path, with 'z' connector at the end, did the Outset become a proper exact copy 36px (~1cm) outside of the object. Not sure about all the issues involved here, it's just nice to know for the moment which hammer was required to achieve the desired result. hello sorry if you already discussed this... i was thinking about how to simulate pages with svg capabilities and inkscape features. i am also in the need to create text forms that are empty by default and don't shrink to the size of the input. i also understand that svg has no rules to solve these problems and probably never will, but... is svg meant to solve higher order layout problems or is a tool like inkscape wrong if it only bases on one svg document per document/file? what would w3c say to this? do they think that multiple pages in a document are to be defined as multiple svg documents in one xml document? are text forms to be programmed with python or javascript or should one integrate other standards like xhtml or xforms? what do you think? maledetto <maledetto@...2748...>
