How do I do 'Power clips' (or Feature request)?

Hi I used to work in Corel draw 7.0 (now seven years old) before switching to inkscape. However there was one very powerful feature that I can't seem to emulate in inkscape: the so called 'Power clip'. In Corel Draw you could place any object inside another object. For example I could design a complex vector drawing and then have the place the whole thing inside a circle so it's clipped as though I'm looking through a port-hole. You could even nest multiple power clips inside one another. Is there some way to achieve this in inkscape? I know you can use object->pattern but that doesn't allow for fine control of positioning one object inside the other and it necessarily tiles the interior object. If there is no easy way of doing this I would like to make a feature request. It's a really powerful tool and Corel draw had it seven years ago! Thanks to the developers for an awesome program :). Inkscape not printing properly

Hi! I'm having trouble printing out my poster project. It consists of 1 layer with several shapes, fonts, and an imported gif w/ background transparency. When I print it, several objects....specifically my background does not print out. I saved it as a pdf and the imported gif did not show up when I viewed it, but everything else was there. Any ideas? Do I have to flatten? If so how? Why can't Inkscape import eps?

EPS is AFAIK a vector format. svg is a vector format. So why can't Inkscape import it? Hey Maarten, The distribution you're thinking of is called Ubuntu Studio ( http://ubuntustudio.org/). It's a derivative of the Ubuntu distribution that focuses on multimedia editing/creation, I've only tried it once, but it seemed to work well. Though I think if you are already running Ubuntu, you can install all the same packages just by adding the Ubuntu Studio repositories to your sources list. Mediabuntu is actually just a repository of packages that can't be included in the main Ubuntu release for legal reasons (libdvdcss etc..) Oh and this is my first time posting here, hi! I've been using Inkscape a little for various pieces of college work and have found it much more enjoyable to use than existing commercial applications. Software is so much more interesting when there is a good community behind it, keep up the good work everybody involved -- developers and users. Cheers. If you have tried the site in the last hour or two did you get through OK? I haven't been able to. If others in the US haven't had that problem then I will climb all over my ISP. Question, for the Scrapbookers who love inkscape.

I am currently running inkscape.45.1 I am a scrapbooker who uses inkscape to generate DXF Files that we convert to files that cut on the personal die cutter machines, We use these as scrapbook titles and die cuts. We found a "Bug" a few versions back that worked great for us, but I think it was tightened up in this version, so I will explain what I need, and see if you wonderful developers can help, yet again. When we want to do a title, it is so much easier to "connect" our letters before we cut, therefore simplifying the assembly of it. In a previous version of inkscape we could type in our title, then kern the letters to our liking, and hit "control j" and then "control l" and have our title all connected and the centers of the letters preserved. This is so much easier than converting to path, then having to break apart, and select the outside paths only and doing a union, However in inkscape.45.1 the control j and control l no longer works, as where the letters overlap, instead of unioning the letters, the overlapped part, the overlap has a path, that would cut on the cutters, and we would have individual letters, instead of a connected word. Is there any way of adding a "Letter Union" function where we can just kern, our letters, and do a letter union, thus preserving the centers, and connecting all the outer parts of the letters, and generating one path for them? (When we do this we always work in outline mode) Thanks, you designers have been fantastic for us. This would really save us lots of time. How to create a circular pattern

I feel completely stupid. Maybe I'm just not seeing that "Get your free circular pattern here" button in Inkscape. What I need is a circular arrangement of clones of an object where I can select an object, set a center point, an increment angle and number of clones and just get some clones along a circle or arc. There's this ultracomplex thingy for "tiling" things but I don't think it does what I need. Thanks, --D.

David, Re my previous post, your question also implies a workflow that will go to Indesign, and well such a workflow is always a source of problem - I got good results nonethless even on transparency, and transparent gradients, with PDF export from Scribus, and import into InDesign. Nonetheless I was unable to check whether CMYK colours remained in the case of Scribus PDF imported in InDesign. Direct PDF export from Inkscape was not so good with the loss of transparent items when imported in InDesign. Such PDF can be imported in Illustrator but not modified! As a matter of fact, creating a gradient where the second colour ONLY has a transparency seems not supported by Illustrator (and very simple in Inkscape). Even creating a gradient fill with only ONE transparent colour in the gradient seems unsupported by InDesign (my latest investigations). Therefore if it was specifically what you intended to do, you may be trying to get InDesign to do what it does not support, even when designing objects from scratch. In the case of the Scribus PDF imported successfully, transparent gradients lead to blending with the background, which of course is not acceptable for a logo, but may still be what you want to achieve. I hope you find this information useful.
