Inkscape can be extremely frustrating

All I want to do to begin with is draw a simple Line Circle. (white background with white inside the circle). But instead it draws a dashed-rectangle with (4) little squares. Two squares are on the rectangle and the other two are outside. So, I go into: Edit, Preferences and the Circle it not even listed under Shapes! Crazy. Does anybody know what I should do? Thank you. improve organization of Extensions menu

Hi Friends, As part of my project to get all the known external extensions listed in one place, and trying to organize them (using the current Extensions menu as a starting place) I've realized that how the Extensions menu is organized might need some improvement. I've also discussed it privately with a couple of other users. So I thought I'd bring up the subject with developers. For example. 1 -- Should Stylesheet be a submenu under Web? 2 -- Should Typography be a submenu under Text? Currently, many extension makers seem to be making their own submenus for their extensions. For people who use a lot of external extensions, I wonder if their menus are harder to use. If we had the menu already organized, it might inspire extension makers to put their extensions into the pre-existing submenus, rather than make their own. 3 -- Should there be a Gcode submenu under Export? (more about Export submenu below) In my list, I've created a separate Gcode category. There are lots of external extensions which produce gcode (approx 20). I don't know where they would show up in the Extensions menu, yet (since I just now learned how to find out). But as I said, it might help keep the menu clean, to have submenus ready for the external extensions, even if there might not be any built-in extensions for some submenus. 4 -- Should the current Gcodetools submenu appear within this proposed Gcode submenu? 5 -- To accomodate external extensions, both Render and Export need to be divided into several submenus. 6 -- I've also created a new category (for my list) Animation/Presentation (currently 10 or 12 of them). It seems like the existing JessyInk submenu should go under there (assuming we were to agree on adding such a submenu). 7 -- There are 3 external extensions which comprise a Boolean category. But shouldn't Boolean be under the existing Modify Path submenu? 8 -- And once I get all the external ones organized, I guess other instances of potentially improved organization might come to light. If anyone else has any observations about improving the organization of the Extensions menu, please feel free to make comments :-) Yes, I realize a lot of developers are getting ready to go to Hackfest. The one Inkscape frustration affecting me

Hi all, Inkscape is one of the best pieces of software I use. It's sometimes hard to use, but the concept of drawing is very complex, so there's only so simple Inkscape can be made. The one Inkscape thing that gets me is switching between having the stroke grow or shrink with the object, when the object is grown or shrunk, as opposed to having the stroke width stay constant. I've given up and just scale rectangles in rectangle mode, or if I need to grow something big (perhaps because it's in a group), I just have to manually change the stroke width EDT (Every Darn Time). I know there's a toggle for this somewhere, but I can't find it in the docs or in experimentation. Wherever this toggle is, it should be shouted from the rooftops in the Inkscape documentation, and also made very obvious and prominent in the menu system, which is the best route toward discovery. By the way, help->Inkscape_Manual fails to bring up a web page on my system. It would be great if you had a copy-and-pasteable (and perhaps clickable) URL of the manual on the Help->About window. organizing external extensions - need a little help

Hi Friends, I'm working on a project to list all the external extensions, on the same page where I have all the best tutorials listed (https://forum.inkscapecommunity.com/index.php) I already have a list made -- approx 300 of them. And I've made an attempt at organizing them. I'm using the current Extensions menu as a starting place for categories. That seems like the most logical way in which users might search for them (or expect to find them). The Render and Export categories have so many that I've made sub-categories. Plus I made a new one called Animation, which holds both animation and presentation type of extensions. But I'm stuck with approx 45 of them which I'm not sure where they would belong. Plus, I might not have gotten the ones I did organize in the proper place. Often extensions might fit in more than one category, but usually one is better than the other. I wonder if anyone might have some time, to help me out with this? I've uploaded an ODT file as an attachment in this forum topic (which I've also requested any forum members who might have time to help). https://forum.inkscapecommunity.com/index.php?topic=1261.0 For clarity, these are specifically what I need help with: -- At the bottom (last 3 pages) is a category called "Unsure". Those are the ones I need the most help with. Ideally I'd like all of them categorized....except that there are several extensions I found which don't have descriptions, and their titles aren't very helpful with knowing what they do either. So there could realistically be a few left over which can't fit into a category. -- There are subcategories in Render and Export called "Other" (among several other subcats). There should be several extensions from "Other" which can fit into other subcategories. -- Generally if you notice any that I put in the wrong place, please move them to the correct place. For anyone who can help, please just edit that file, and upload it somewhere. (The file itself is just my working list. It's not going on the webpage, so don't worry about the formatting or font. I'll deal with that when I code the page.) I really appreciate any help which anyone can offer. And I think it will benefit the community as well, to have sort of a master list available, so users don't have to spend so much time searching the internet. Thank you very much, brynn
