NEW: smoother panning and scrolling

Several improvements make canvas panning and scrolling smoother and more interactive in complex slow-rendering documents: * When panning by the middle mouse button, Inkscape no longer attempts to redraw the canvas while your mouse button is pressed. Any redrawing only happens after you release the mouse. As a result, the newly revealed parts of the canvas are somewhat more "dirty" but the panning is smoother than before, with few if any "hiccups". * Previously, if you start panning with middle button while Inkscape is still redrawing screen in a complex drawing, panning sometimes completely failed or moved canvas just a little step. Now it is guaranteed to pan the canvas all the way from mouse-press point to mouse-release point in any case, even if sometimes it fails to show the intermediate positions. * When pressing and holding Ctrl+arrows to scroll canvas, Inkscape normally accelerates scrolling so that each next scrolling step is bigger than the previous. Previously, in complex drawings this acceleration sometimes got interrupted, which made scrolling annoyingly bumpy and slow. Now this is fixed so that scrolling is smoothly accelerated even in a slow-rendering document. * The default starting speed and acceleration of Ctrl+arrows scrolling are slightly increased. Hi I bought a Wacom Graphire 4 classic tablet and I can use it directly on inkscape, as expected, as a normal mouse/pointer. I noticed Inkscape has an 'Input Devices' entry on the File menu, but it says there aren't special input devices available. Is this usual? Cheers Alberto -- Alberto Simões

Scripting the fill style

Hi, Not sure if I should be bothering this list with this, but it may also be functionality currently missing from Inkscape (?) I'm using Inkscape to create interactive SVG drawings that allow the viewer colour in the picture, painting by numbers style (I've attached a simple test svg as an example). The (minor) problems encountered so far are: 1 - Inkscape uses the style attribute on each element to set the fill colour, and I have to manually go through each element changing them for my script code to work. Manipulating the style attribute in code would require parsing to preservation all the other style definitions. Is there any way to force inkscape to save style attributes of drawing elements as separate elements (as I have altered in the attached example)? 2 - should Inkscape treat script element as CDATA, as it currently treats it as a text node and replaces " with " etc.

Beginner's question regarding default_mm template/absolute svg sizes

Hi, sorry if this is FAQ, but I have searched Google and the archive and did not find a suitable answer. I have a small problem. I need to prepare some SVG files for the use with Apache's FOP. Inkscape seems to be the perfect tool for this, so I installed the latest version 0.45. However, I discovered that FOP measures a pixel as a 1/72 inch, while Inkscape measures a pixel as a 1/90 inch. Then I found out that there are default templates of various sizes, and one of them is "default_mm", which actually announces the image size in the <svg> element in absolute units. Unfortunately, whenever I resize the document size, Inkscape falls back into pixel mode when saving the file. What am I doing wrong? Is it an intended behaviour or is it a bug? I found a workaround, namely scaling the image by 72/90, however, I would prefer a clean solution. Thanks in advance for any answer. Klaus

how to group layers

Sorry folks, I am sure this has been explained somewhere but I cannot find the "somewhere": I have an image that I want to scale bigger, how do I group the layers to do this so the full image and all its layers (only 4) are scaled the same? adam

Seymour, Unfortunately a paragraph text one exported is not editable, as it is rasterized (it's then just a bunch of pixels as any other object). The best alternative would be exporting the graphics to PNG and then add the text in the Gimp. I searched the Inkscape web, but I wasn't able to find a better place to post it, and I think it may be interesting as a showcase of how Inkscape is being introduced in the graphic design community. Starting on April the 11th and until the 3rd of May, the Galizan government[1], through the Multimedia Center of Galiza[2], will be offering 33-hour courses on graphic design with Inkscape, within a series themed around the creation of multimedia content with Free Software[3].
