HI I should write a new application to handle some graphical requirement , now i have come here to ask you about it and i would be happy to get your advice Here is almost a complete description of my requirement I should develop an application to control a marking machine , A marking machine is a machine capable of marking some shapes / texts on metal, wood, glass surfaces. the requirement for project is : 1-the GUI interface should be capable to draw cad shapes , things like : Circle , Polygon ,.... . I read the SVG spec and i find that SVG itself has all shapes that i need as basic elements. so my first requirement is satisfied with any OSS Graphical SVG editor. 2-second feature is , CAD like capabilities , there should be some kind of ruler , Grid to guide the users about what they are drawing and a precision about 1/10 mm . 3-one thing that is very important is , software should be able to return all points in the drawing pane , for more explanation : imagine that i draw a line on the GUI interface (in drawing pane) , now i should be able to retrieve all of its points , or at least all important points (Start and END). by all points i mean the pixels or logical points that are arranged side by side to produce the shape. for example a circle could be produced by an 80 side polygon , i should be able to retrieve each side (which is a line) start and end coordination. 4-This requirement is something that made me crazy right now -i developed an application with Delphi but i stopped with texts there is no way that i can find al points that produce some parts of a character in Delphi and graphical pane that i used for drawing- The software that I'm going to start and complete in *Java/C++/.... *based on one of the available OSS editor should be able to give me important points or all drawing points of texts that are reside on its visual editor. for example , you imagine that some one need to mark an HLM on one of its metal surface , he/she come to my software and write that characters on graphical editor pane , s/he change is font... and then press the Mark button , Now i should be able to retrieve all points that created H (or all important points that one can create H using them and some simple drawing algorithms) and send them to Serial port and from there to mechanical sections of machine. right now all section of machine are complete , my Delphi software can communicate with it (I simply can arrange a java or C++ software to communicate with my hardware controller) Now my question for help is more clear , so i would welcome any comment / help / advice on this topic I should say that , i find some suitable DXF library in Java which i can use to import DXF files into my java application , I know XML processing so processing SVG files would not be so hard for me to learn.

Cell Display?

I'm trying to compose a small comic, and I'd like to create the panels and layout in Inkscape. Is there any way to take an arbitrary closed path (not necessarily a square) and use a raster image to fill it? The closest thing I could find was to import all the raster images, convert them to patterns, fill the shapes using those patterns, then rescale the shapes while toggling on/off the "Transform shape along with object" button until the patterns fit correctly. This whole process is extremely awkward and time consuming, and it would really be convenient to just fill a shape using an image, without first having to import/pattern/transform an image. Is there an easier way? Thanks, Chris

Inkscape PDF output

Hi, I have a question about PDF output. When you look at the screenshot http://img73.imageshack.us/img73/8774/bildschirmfoto40ji.png you can see the inkscape window on the left side and on the right side the corresponding pdf. I created the pdf with inkscape 0.43 on Debian linux with the "Save as pdf" command. As you can see it's not very nice. When I "Save as ps" without converting text to path, I can import the ps into scribus and create a pdf from there. Then at least the text is antialiased, but the rest of the drawing still looks ugly. My question: Is there currently any way to create antialiased graphics / text in the pdf? Is there any software that does nice svg-->pdf conversion? Linux or windows, I don't care, I just need a good result. For now I have found a workaround: I export as hi-res png then I can use imagemagick to convert to pdf, but I would prefer a solution which does destroy the vector information of the original file. how do i clear the settings for a shape

I have added a star shape to my drawing and changed the number of nodes, size and rotation, to a point where it no longer looks like a star. Now when ever I add a new star shape to my drawing, it remembers my previous edits. How do i clear this sticky setting and revert back to the default shape thanks sanubolu

Default line width

Is there any way to set a default line width? Inkscape seems to always wants to use zero width, which isn't very useful, especially for line and bezier drawing! It also doesn't seem to remember the width from one line to the next. Is this intended, or a bug? Using v 0.43 on Mdk 10.1 -- No Sig
