Connector question

Hi, I've used Inkscape for a couple of weeks now mostly for drawing diagrams, and I've noticed some bugs also mentioned in the Wiki: http://wiki.inkscape.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?UsingTheConnectorTool, hence I've not posted any bugreports. However, I'd like to know when they're likely to be fixed. The main issues for me are: 1) Draw connectors to shape edges rather than bounding box. (Quite annoying when using connectors with circles) 2) Fix minor endpoint position error for connected objects. (The arrow points inside the edge of the box, rather than to the edge) These issues makes it impossible for me to use Inkscape in a production environment, which I'd like to do since it's a great tool. Xara Xtreme

I downloaded the free, full-featured Xara (15-day trial). Wow, again, that's all I can say. This is a fast, fast full-up drawing and photo handling program. Mature, handling text and type well, with feathering, transprency, shadowing, and unbelievable ease of use. For what I do it replaces Inkscape, GIMP, and Scribus. Xara has drag and drop from its photo browser to itself. Like the publishers have been saying: It's an Adobe and Microsoft graphics-app killer. And it has CorelDRAW! origins as I can see by using it. But, and there always seems to be a "but", it is not ready for Linux yet, and may take a year for it to get to the level of the trial version I'm testing (Windows XP). <sigh> Frank

Shift+Ctrl+F ...problem

Hey folks, I just unplugged a 2nd monitor from my laptop and re-configured my display to see just the main monitor. Everything works fine accept that when ever I try and bring up the 'fill and stroke' or the 'font' dialog using the key stroke sequence of (Shift+Ctrl+F) or (Shift+Ctrl+T), its like Inkscape still thinks I have a 2nd monitor up and does not display these items on the main screen- they are hidden and unusable. Has anyone encountered this problem before? If so, is there an easy solution? Thanks- PDR

Xara Announcement

Hi all, The big news with Xara is finally coming out today. :-) Xara has ported their product to Linux and will be Open Sourcing it. For more details, see http://xaraxtreme.org/. A press release is coming out, and is appended to this message. Charles Moir has been talking with me about this privately for the past couple months. His interest is to see Inkscape and Xara be in collaboration rather than competition, and I've been sharing ideas (such as the XAR/SVG project) along these lines. I've suggesting that merging inkscape and xara codebases would probably be impractical, but it might be possible to take the best bits of both and create something better than either, down the road. It seemed wisest in the near term for them to release what they've got, and to focus on making it work on Linux, which they've now done. :-) The key question for us is how we want to relate to Xara when the code is released. Would it make sense for us to share code with Xara? Should we merge, or remain distinct? They'd be open to sharing svn repositories if we'd like (I mentioned we've been looking to upgrade from cvs, and they already use svn)? Anyway, check it out (a Linux binary preview is downloadable, and there's also a pretty sweet movie) and share your thoughts. Wikipedia's svg rendering does not match Inkscape's

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:GalacticRotation.svg Take a look at Wikipedia's rendering, and then open the file (the link just below the image) in Inkscape. Which is correct? I intended line A to be dashed and C to be dotted, but Wikipedia renders A as dotted and C as dithered. Compile issue (RHEL4, AMD64)

I am getting the following failure on a RHEL4 system on an AMD64 machine when configuring: ... checking libgc version 6.4+... no configure: error: libgc (the Boehm Conservative Collector) 6.4+, is needed to compile inkscape -- http://www.hpl.hp.com/personal/Hans_Boehm/gc Doing a 'locate libgc' finds a lot of things (obviously, since it matches partials), but the notable ones: /usr/local/gc6.6/.libs/libgc.so /usr/local/gc6.6/.libs/libgc.lai /usr/local/gc6.6/.libs/libgc.a /usr/local/gc6.6/.libs/libgc.la /usr/local/gc6.6/.libs/libgc.so.1.0.2 /usr/local/gc6.6/.libs/libgc.so.1 /usr/local/gc6.6/libgc.la and /usr/local/lib/libgc.so /usr/local/lib/libgc.a /usr/local/lib/libgc.la /usr/local/lib/libgc.so.1.0.2 /usr/local/lib/libgc.so.1 This is because I downloaded and compiled from the Boehm site mentioned in the configure error. I am not a programmer (am a sysadmin) but I believe what is going on is that ./configure needs to know where to find gc. I have tried using up2date to install libgc and libgc-devel, but the version is wrong (6.2.255). What are the configure args I need to include here to point to the new gc object? Alternatively, does anyone know of a libgc-6.4+ rpm anywhere? I have searched a few repos and not found any (all 6.2). John
