Hi, I'd like inquire about some features. The clone tool: First of all, it reminds me of Geometer's Sketchpad...a program I used while in high school to make complex geometric drawings. It would be nice if Inkscape implemented some features of Geometer's Sketchpad as, IMHO, it would make drawing easier. When I think of "clone", I think "indistinguishable." As a user, it doesn't make any sense that the original object has properties that the clone does not...namely, if I rotate the original object, then the clone will rotate...but if I rotate the clone, the original will not rotate. It seems the the current clone implementation is more like a "copycat" or "leader/follower" type relationship. It would be nice if Inkscape allowed for BOTH mechanisms: copycat and clone. When you do copycat, the copies will mimic the original, but the original will not mimic the copy. When you do clone, either object will mimic the other object since they are indistinguishable. --- Geometer's Sketchpad has a feature where you could add a "point". Let me give an example of how this was used: You create a circle. You add a "point" to the circle. This point is linked to the circle. If you move the cirlce, the point moves with the circle. Additionally, the point can be moved, but its movement is constrained to the circle. Suppose I make a smaller circle using the point as the origin. This smaller circle is now linked to the point. Thus, if I dragged the point along the bigger circle, I would also be dragging the smaller circle around the circle. This feature would be very nice to have. Suppose I made a curved line. I could add a point to the line, and then I could create another object using that point. Moving the point (along the curved line) would move the object that was created from the point. These 'points' are VERY powerful tools. ---- In Geometer's Sketchpad, one had the ability to clone-reflect an object about a line. Upon doing so, there would be two indistinguishably, linked objects. If you moved one object closer to the reflection line, then the other object would move closer to the reflection line. Notice, it didn't matter which object you chose to move. This would be a VERY NICE feature in Inkscape...and I think it is pretty clear how useful it could be. --- Often, I find that I want to rotate many different objects about the same point...but not necessary all at once. This means, that I need strict placement of the roatation point---as any difference is usually noticable. When dragging the cursor, the coordinates are show in the status bar, but is it possible to exactly specify the coordinates? --- Geometer's Sketchpad also allowed you to draw perpendicular lines....or draw bisecting angles....or make a midpoint between two points. I believe these will be taken care of when Inkscape implements snapping to objects (please correct me if I am wrong). Corel Draw currently supports this. You can snap to the center of an object, the midpoint of a line, to a quadrant, and to a node. Anyway, this is a wonderful program. Inkscape 0.42 release

This weekend the Inkscape 0.42 release was branched and tagged, and packages posted. Congrats to everyone that participated in this release! With CVS now tagged and branched, this means we are past the hard freeze. The codebase is now open for commits. Regarding CVS access: If you need access, the rule is that you must have two patches accepted. I know a *lot* of people had patches accepted, so there's probably a fair number of you who qualify. If this describes you, please email your SourceForge ID to me or another admin. (Note that you can continue using the patch tracker if you prefer, the CVS access is given for your convenience.) Our final step to complete the release is to get word out about the release. Rejon is creating and distributing release announcements, but I would also like to strongly encourage others to send out word. Please help us get word out about Inkscape 0.42. Tell people about the nifty new features it has; show off examples of the cool things you're able to do with it; write articles about it in some of the online news sites; find new mailing lists or websites to send our announcement; demo it at LUG's or other OSS gatherings; help friends or family members install it. Looking further forward, I think there is a general concensus that we want to get 0.43 out more quickly than 0.42. This is mainly to give the SoC students a chance to participate in an open source project's full release cycle. We're hoping that 0.43 can be done on the order of a month or two. Bryce

rpms for novel 9.2

I have tried the rpms for inkscape .42 I have tried both Static binary RPM - i386 .rpm or i686 .rpm Actually all of them I could find. They compile fine but when I try to bring it up nothing happens. July 26, 2005 — The Inkscape community today announced the release of Inkscape 0.42, a cross-platform Open Source Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) drawing tool. Inkscape 0.42 is the most feature-filled release to date, with an exceptional number of major and minor new features, usability improvements, and bug fixes. While some of the new features simply fill long-standing functionality gaps, others are truly revolutionary. Inkscape 0.42 is one step closer to full SVG compliance. This release adds: * Flowed Text: Text objects that automatically re-flow to any shape (and not just a rectangle). * Text Selection: One can now select part of a text and apply any style to the selection, just like in a word processing application. * Gradient Tool: A completely redesigned and much easier to use on-canvas gradient interface with handles displayed directly in the drawing. * Effects: These are now usable from within Inkscape on all platforms. This version ships with a collection of effects including path interpolation, randomization, and various fractal algorithms. * Color Swatches: This standard facility of most graphics software is now a part of Inkscape. * Colored Clones: Clones may now be painted differently from their original. * Tile Tracing: The Tile Clones dialog can trace an existing image with tiling, producing a multitude of exciting effects. * Grid Arrange, Baseline Align, Unclumping: There are new, powerful ways to arrange objects. * Better PS/EPS Export: PostScript level 3 gradient support, better text handling, and a command line option for batch export are in this release. * Command Line SVG Analysis: Inkscape may now be used from the command line to query coordinates and dimensions of objects in an SVG file. * Better SVG/CSS Compliance: Notably, internal CSS stylesheets are now supported (read-only). * Mac OS X Support: In addition to Linux and Windows, Inkscape 0.42 is now available as a fully self-contained dmg package for Mac OS X. There are also dozens of smaller features and usability enhancements (especially in the Fill & Stroke dialog, Node tool, and drawing tools). In this version the development community closed 404 bugs, some quite serious, and 165 feature requests. Overall, the Inkscape developers are very excited about this release and heartily recommend upgrading. Thanks to Google's Summer of Code, there are four new student developers adding new functionality to Inkscape this summer. Michael Wybrow is adding connectors for automatic diagramming. David Yip is picking up the development of Inkboard (http://inkboard.sf.net/) to integrate networked collaborative editing of documents to Inkscape. Matthew Squires is adding DXF Import and Export. Greg Steffensen is working with the Open Clip Art Library to make a common graphical interface from the Library to Inkscape. rescale a SVG

Hello everyone, recently I created a presentation using inkscape. I specified 1280x1024 under File|Document Preferences|Custom Canvas. Then, I found out most installations use the display ratio 4:3 (e.g. 1600x1200, 1024x768, and 800x600) - including the computer that will run the presentation. Now, if I use inkview to view the presentation full-screen on such a computer, a white stripe is added to the right of each page - to keep the aspect ratio; compensating the difference 5:4 and 4:3. Of course, this white edge is unacceptable. How can I avoid this? Inkview has no options yet, and so the only solution is to change each SVG in the presentation. But how do I do this? Changing Custom Canvas again won't rescale the SVG - I have to: * select everything - Ctrl+A * Object|Transform|Scale - Vertical = 93.75% * Object|Transform|Move - Vertical = 32 * File|Document Preferences|Custom Canvas - 1280x960 This is a pain when I have to do this for all the pages in the presentation. Is there a trick that will achieve the same? Or a tool/script (possibly outside of inkscape)? Or am I to create a script in the inkscape (I have not looked into it but I would be able to write one using the Python interface for embedded scripting)? Another question, is there a repository/web page/whatever for sharing these scripts? TIA, jbar
