I saw this today in a blog post: http://web.mit.edu/persci/people/adelson/checkershadow_illusion.html It's obviously visually astonishing, and my first thought was that it would make a great sample in inkscape, although perhaps not distributed without permission. Unfortunately, I'm not yet able to make the basic perspective shapes in inkscape, much less the convincing visual illusion of shadow. If any expert inkscape user with good perspective-, alpha- and gradient-fu wanted to try this one, it would make a one humdinger of a tutorial. Thanks. problem with text to path solved!

I dunno what the deal was/is. I got it to work. First I had to "unflow" the text to frame (which seems to be the default), then text to path worked just fine! I did manage to solve my text to path problem...before seeing all the helpful replies, but thank you anyway, I appreciate it. I have already used Inkscape to create a very cool lookin' personal logo, which I then exported to Gimp and gussied up with some textures and bump mapping. I find the path tool in Inkscape to be easier to work with than that of Gimp, plus I can more easily scale what I have made. This program is incredible. Anyone live near Enschede, Netherlands?

Hello, I am not able to attend a svgopen.org in Enschede, yet have a paper, Introduction to the Open Clip Art Library and am scheduled to present this in Enschede as part of svgopen.org for 2005. Would anyone be willing to present the project on my behalf? I have the slides, paper, and talk all prepared, and it would just be a matter of schmoozing and talking with participants. If I can't find someone to do this, then I will have to remove the presentation and maybe paper from the conference...which I really don't want to do. This is driving me nuts!

I have downloaded InkScape 4.2 both the windows and linux versions. So far I really like it, very cool. But so far there is one feature that I just cannot seem to get to work: Text to Path. I draw the curve (bezier), I make some text, I select the text and the curve together with shift-click, I go up to the menu for text and select "text to path"...and absolutely nothing happens. I have read the insructions for this several times to see if I am missing something, but I am doing exactly what they tell me to do, and I get zip. This is one of the major reasons I was interested in this program. I get the same result with both win and linux versions. Halp! plotters and Inkscape

Hi. I just subscribed to the list, and so forgive me if I'm bringing up a settled topic. :o/ I was just wondering if Inkscape handles plotters. If not, what software (pref. open-source) do you guys use for running your plotters on Windows, Mac, and Linux? My wife uses a Roland plotter to cut vinyl and flock. Right now, the only app she has is Dr. Stika, which she says is crap. The only other package she knows of is Ultra-something, and it's like a thousand bucks. She manipulates the images in Illustrator and Photoshop, but needs better software to actually run the plotter. I was hoping that Inkscape supported this functionality, maybe with a plugin or third-party add-on. Is there any hope? Thank you, Shawn Milo

Inkscape 0.42 on Mac OS X

I can't seem to get Inkscape 0.42 to run on my PowerBook running Mac OS X 10.4.2. If I double-click on Inkscape to launch it, X11 starts up just fine, but Inkscape never starts. If I try to launch Inkscape after X11 is already running, the Inkscape icon appears briefly then disappears on my dock. Any ideas, anyone? Any help is appreciated. John Cradock kananga@...155...

I've posted the presentation I gave at the Desktop Developer's Conference in Ottawa last week here: http://www.bryceharrington.com/Present_desktopcon/ Looks like Firefox can display most of it directly, but a few slides are missing some of the elements, so I've also uploaded it as a tarball. To view it, open the tarball, cd into Present_desktopcon/ and then run $ inkview *.svg Also, there is a Slideshow/ directory with some examples of art that folks have done with Inkscape. Bryce

stroke stroking stroke

I'm having problems adjusting the outline thickness in the Stroke Style window. Once I start changing the thickness, it jumps up high and won't go below 16pt. anymore while the default seems to be 1000 pt. This is too thick to be of any use for me.
