Rotating objects

In Inkscape, if you select more then one object and do a rotation transform, it rotates both objects as if they were one. For instance, if you have a horizontal line of squares and rotate them 90 degrees clockwise through the transform dialogue, you get a verticle line of squares. However, I want Inkscape to rotate some objects like it does with the "rotate 90 degrees" button. It is tiresome to select one object after another and rotate it 45 degrees or some other number that isn't a multiple of 90. Is there some way to turn off the "smooth" or "symmetrical" (I am thinking it is smooth), default which appears to occur when dragging a second handle out from a bezier shape node? It is exasperating. I just get a curve positioned the way I want, and need to do something on an adjacent curve, but when I drag out a handle..."sproinnnggggg" there goes my carefully positioned first curve, then I have to unlock the handles with "make corner", reposition my first curve (again), and then move on to the second curve. Also, a few times I have mistakenly made a handle where I didn't want one. Is there a way to "return" the handle to the node? I have just positioned it back as close to the node as possible, but it isn't quite the same and then if I want to move the node, I keep grabbing the handle by mistake. Why do things slow down so much when I zoom in on a curve? Up close, it seems to take forever to drag a node to a new position (and my designs aren't all that complex). A couple of times, I have moved something, but for some reason, the mouse doesn't "let go" of the node right a way when I release the mouse button. The next thing I know, the node I just so carefully moved is "sproiiinnngggg" way over where my mouse now is. The first one that comes to mind...and maybe there is already something like this and I ain't found it yet, is the object equivalent of text to path. In other words, take an object, or series of objects, and repeat it, either oriented "perpendicular" to the path at a given point (ala the text function), or oriented as it is to start, but repeated along the path. Either one with a user specified interval. Next would be perhaps some kind of sine wave function, with options for wavelength, amplitude, and various types of distortion, i.e. sawtooth (if you want to reverse it, just flip the object in the opposite direction), square wave, and "clipping" of the wave. It might also be possible to use a second wave to "cut" sections of the first wave or amplify them...not really sure what could be done with such a thing, but it might be useful. It also might be interesting to make the gradient tool work in conjunction with this "wave" tool, you could specify whether the gradient would start at the center of the wave's amplitude and fade in/out toward the center/edges. Maybe all of the above is possible with existing functions somehow or other...I am pretty new to Inkscape and have just begun to explore it's possibilites. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I've posted a news item about the pending 0.42.1 release, to help warn people who might be running into trouble, and let them know that the best thing to do if they're having trouble is to sit tight until the fixed package is posted. Checkerboard illusion would make a great inkscape sample

I saw this today in a blog post: http://web.mit.edu/persci/people/adelson/checkershadow_illusion.html It's obviously visually astonishing, and my first thought was that it would make a great sample in inkscape, although perhaps not distributed without permission. Unfortunately, I'm not yet able to make the basic perspective shapes in inkscape, much less the convincing visual illusion of shadow. If any expert inkscape user with good perspective-, alpha- and gradient-fu wanted to try this one, it would make a one humdinger of a tutorial. Thanks.
