Somebody privately emailed me advising me to check the following box to eliminate this symptom: Edit>Preferences>Behavior>Transforms>Transform Gradients This indeed cured the problem. I will be hammering this hard on my Wednesday night presentation. I don't know why transforming gradients isn't the default behavior --- after all, gradients are placed in objects, and all objects can be transformed (moved). In the rare instance when you don't want the gradient to follow the object, it's easy enough to grab the handle(s) and move the gradient after the fact. A little more about the symptom. I reproduced it just now, and the problem isn't that the gradient handles disappear, but instead that things re-center and the handles go offscreen. By zooming out I was able to locate and move the gradient handles. GoLUG Inkscape presentation 1/5/2022

Hi all, GoLUG is going to have another Inkscape presentation, online via Jitsi, at 7pm Eastern (New York) time on 1/5/2022. I can give the presentation, but at our last Inkscape presentation one of the attendees had triple the Inkscape knowledge, and I'm wondering if she'd like to give the presentation instead of me. All I know about her is she's on the Inkscape-User list, and from her accent I don't think she was born in the United States. Help us staff a booth at the largest German Online Linux event (English/German)!

Hi everyone, the Inkscape project is planning to host a virtual booth/stand again at the Chemnitzer Linuxtage (CLT), on March 12 and 13 (Sat/Sun) 2022! Usually the largest Linux and Open Source event in Germany, CLT are going to be an online-only event in 2022 again. The CLT (Chemnitzer Linuxtage) are an all-day event and we could use your help answering user questions about how to work with the program, how to contribute to it and about what is going on in the Inkscape community, by being available for questions and chatting at our virtual booth. The other thing we plan to do again is a series of short, 10 to 50 min topic-focused sessions – show other users how you use Inkscape, how to use your Inkscape extension, how people can help the Inkscape project or which cool things you made with Inkscape (and they can, too!). A live drawing session, a demonstration, a tour through your maker lab - anything that has to do with Inkscape is possible! So, no matter if you're 'just a user', a developer, a forum member, a regular user support provider in our chat channels, an Inkscape translator or other contributor – if you have some time available to spend helping the Inkscape project on that weekend in March, we would very much appreciate your help! Hi all, Be very careful, with any document containing gradients, when performing File=>Document Properties=>Resize. I had a rectangle with a radial gradient above a big rectangle and below a schematic diagram. The drawing, which had taken me about 8 hours, was finished. All I needed to do was resize it and save. When I resized, the gradient disappeared and the rectangle was a solid color. I attempted to re-do the gradient, but this time it was too bright and ended too abruptly. I haven't decided how to deal with this yet, but I just wanted to advise you: Don't apply a gradient to anything until your drawing is the proper size, look frequently to make sure your gradient(s) remain the same, and if you have gradients, back up after every single save. Top 20 tips for using Inkscape to make diagrams?

Hi all, My next book (almost complete) is about constructing Mental Models. I recommend Inkscape for those using Linux. The book has an appendix on using Inkscape. I'm looking to just cover things most important and often used in drawing diagrams with boxes, text and lines. In the cheatsheet portion, I have: Esc: Unselect s: Enter Select Mode t: Text Ctrl+D: Duplicate Object Shift+Ctrl+F: Edit Object's Visible Properties: Shift+Ctrl+A: Align And Distribute Objects: In the Tips section, I have: * How to make all the toolbars visible * Turn off all snapping (Shift+5) * Turning off changing an object's stroke width with changes of object size * F12 to toggle visibility of dialog boxes * Use 12 to 14 point fonts for labels * Don't use Inkscape connectors for interaction lines - They don't work right - Use lines or Bezier curves instead * Don't use multiline text: Use 1 text object per line instead - Multiline text isn't part of SVG - Multiline text often and unpredictably screws up in Inkscape I also have a short section on how to create and manipulate Beziers (paths). This appendix isn't meant to teach Inkscape or be an Inkscape reference. It's merely a guide to most useful Inkscape tactics for diagram drawing, and warnings to stay away from landmines. Can anybody think of very important tactics to use for creating box-and-line diagrams for Inkscape?
