Matplotlib svg import

Hi all, I am currently trying to paste svg data that has been generated with matplotlib (http://matplotlib.org/) via the clipboard into inkscape. Pasting via the clipboard would make it easier to include charts from the spreadsheet pyspread (http://manns.github.com/pyspread/) into Jessyink presentations. I have attached an example chart. When opened with inkscape, it displays perfectly. When imported, the chart line is missing. When I paste the file contents via the clipboard (copied from an editor) nothing happens. I would expect identical results. Are interfaces different for "file open", "import svg" and "clipboard paste" operations? Do I have to change something in the data so that inkscape accepts it as clipboard pasteable? Should I open a bug report? I am using inkscape 0.48.3.1 on Debian sid/squeeze (i386). Cheers, Martin

Hi everybody, I'm using Inkscape also to make animations like: <path ... d=" (a path) "> <animate ......to=" (the new path) "> When I load such a file into inkscape -for example, to add a new path- and save it at the end as *.svg, all parts of the original code, that can't be seen in inkscape are deleted. Is there any possibility, to save it in a way, that everything remains as it is, only the new path is added? regards, Hago

Inkscape as template file

Hi all, Inscape plus Python plus PyYaml provides a powerful tool. What you can do is, in the Inkscape file, put @varname@ everywhere you want a substitution token. Then, in your YAML file, you do something like this: template: name: Steve Litt date: 1/21/2013 city: Orlando, Florida Then write a very simple nested loop that, upon encountering @name@, substitutes "Steve Litt". This can even be used to link a bitmap graphic into an Inkscape file. The beauty of this is it's a very generic tool. All specifics are in the Inkscape template file and the YAML file, but the Python program itself is generic. This technique could actually be used with any kind of template file, but of course this is the Inkscape mailing list. SteveT

Android tablet as drawing input

Hey Inkscapers, check this out http://www.gimpusers.com/news/00462-use-android-tablet-as-graphics-tablet-w… A simple use of an android tablet to feed as an extended X input device for drawing in Linux. Needs the X11 driver part to feed the data from the Android device to the X11 system, but from there it should end up working for all apps, including Inkscape. This is overlapping an area I was working at from the other direction, but should be easy for me to hook up to from Inkscape directly. My talk at LCA 2013 is going to be on that input work (using wiimotes, guitars, gamepads, etc.) and once I get to the point of reading in drawing data (in addition to current use as keys and pressure modifiers) using that should be very simple and avoid the need for any X11 drivers. Oh, and from what I see of the protocol, it should end up working cross-platform.

My certificate of completion machine

Hi all, I just wanted to share an Inkscape accomplishment. My customer wanted certificates of completion for for their students after their students completed my Troubleshooting Course. So I made a certificate of completion, with a token where the student name should have been, and then wrote a small Python program which read each student name, replaced the token in the Inkscape file, then converted to PDF. It worked flawlesly. Now I'm expanding the Python program to have tokens for not only the name, but also the place, date range, course title, date of signature, and a few other things, and I'm going to start offering to all my customers. Inkscape is the perfect product to do this because it's basically just an XML file that easily accommodates token strings replaceable by Python, Perl, Ruby, Lua, C, sed or awk. And Inkscape is easy to create certificate graphics in, and it produces small PDFs. Thanks for the great graphics program. Regression in test Inkscape builds. How to file bug?

(I originally sent this using the wrong email address. I'm expecting that one to bounce back, which is why I'm sending this one. If you see this message twice I apologize profusely.) I'm a little stuck on the proper "etiquette" for reporting a regression. I've been playing around with the test builds for Inkscape and I've noticed a regression. In 2009 or thereabouts there was a KDE bug that prevented you from using guides -- if you tried to drag a guide down from either of the rulers, you wound up dragging the entire window around instead. That bug was fixed, but it appears to be back. What's the best way to report that? Should I locate the original bug report (which is probably closed at this point) and add a comment noting that it is back, or should I enter a new bug report and reference that one? (Of course it could be that someone else has already reported this. I didn't find the new bug report, though, just the old one.) Christopher B. Wright (wrightc@...537...)

undefined references to libstdc++

Hi I'm trying to build Inkscape 0.48.4 on Fedora 16. I am using gcc 4.6.3. When I run make I get a bunch of CXXLD undefined reference errors about _M_hook, _M_unhook, _M_transfer and swap from/usr/include/c++/4.6.3/bits/stl_list.h, /usr/include/c++/4.6.3/bits/list.tcc, /usr/lib/libglibmm-2.4.so and /usr/lib/libgtkmm-2.4.so. I looked on the net and found that these should be defined in libstdc++. Help needed and website redesign update

All, Sorry for the lag in updates regarding the site. It has been a bit depressing and I also have been extremely busy. In all honesty we had a great design and some extremely motivated people who started the project of redoing the website. As with all open source projects time and experience got the best of us (myself included). The website design was completed long ago and it looks great. It can be seen here http://en.dev.inkscape.org/ . We started the migration portion and that's about as far as we got. We had one backend mostly complete when we realized that that dev was unable to complete the project without a rewrite and sadly lacked the time due to school commitments etc. Next we had a second developer start rewriting the code and unfortunately due to time constraints is unable to finish. That being said I am open to suggestions but we need a strict time line to at least complete the basic portion of the inkscape site. That being said, We need help. I also may even be open for consideration of Content management systems that would allow us to build in these features fairly easily and allow the site to contain the same functionality and UI. If you have any talent in the web development world. Please get back to me and lets get the ball rolling! I know the holiday's can sometimes allow time to tinker but they also can be difficult times as well. Please feel free to make suggestions on how you're able to help us complete the website redesign. Relative Paths

Hi all, First time posting on the Inkscape mailing lists, so I hope this is the right place for a small feature discussion. I've been trying to move around .svg files created with Inkscape, only to find out that paths are by default absolute when linking external images. Manually editing the XML files or using the image property window works, sure, but it's tedious if you have a lot of images. It seems to me that Inkscape *should* understand that I'm trying to link files from the exact same directory as the .svg file, and automatically use relative paths. I've found a wiki page about this and more (http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Image_links_manager), as well as somebody else with the same issues (https://answers.launchpad.net/inkscape/+question/77201) since 2009, and I wondered : what is the status on that feature? Now, this is slightly above the "inkscape user" level, but if nobody's working on it and you don't mind me trying, I can submit a patch in a few days for the "automatically use relative paths" feature, at the very least. More intuitive circles

Dear Inkers, I'm wondering if tere is a more intuitive way to draw a perfect round circle and center it at t point where i start drawing it. now when i make a circle then it's edge is where i start to draw, then it becomes an oval, i need to resize, then replace it, siee if it is centered since the auto centering tool doesn't really snap right. Every time i draw a circle i would expect that- When i start to draw, thats the center point. Where i stop, is the edge. ...and that should be all Klik drag klik a circle at the exact spot where i wanted it, and at the exact size, and NOT an oval.. Is there something i'm not aware of? Or a config setting to get a more intuitive behaviour for this? Kind Regards, Mano

ALT-Key + Linux

Hi there, in almost any Linux window manager the Alt-key is reserved for window actions, otoh it is important for Inkscape. I used to map the Alt-key to the Super(Windows)-Key in Gnome to circumvent that, but in Gnome3 you need the Windows key for some actions, too. >From the back of my mind I remember that there was a possibility in Inkscape to deal with the dual use of the Alt key but I don't remember which one. 3d text.

-There are several tutorials on producing 3d buttons but what about 3d text? I want to simulate the look of embossed text as found on a mass market paperback cover. A gel looking text can be produced in Gimp following a 32 step (!) procedure. I am looking for an inkscape technique that is a little less arduous and of course in Inkscape, not Gimp. Importing PDF with embedded fonts

Hi, When importing a PDF document with embedded fonts, I lose the glyphs of these fonts. They are either replaced by 'unknown' glyphs, or symbols from another font, depending on whether the import option "Replace PDF fonts with closest-named installed fonts' is checked. I am, however, positively sure that medio last year I have imported similar documents without losing the glyphs of the embedded fonts. But I cannot find out what did change between then and now. Does anyone here have any ideas how to import a PDF document with embedded fonts? -- Johan

Run Extrude extension on all objects in a file

Image Filter effect disappearing in pdf export

Hi all, I noticed that when I apply a filter to an image embedded in a svg file (e.g. filter > image effect > blueprint) and subsequently export the document to pdf (file > save a copy > pdf) the filter effect that was visible in the svg disappears in the resulting pdf. Batch trace of bitmaps

Hi Inkscape list, Is it possible for inkscape, or some other command line utility, to do batch tracing of bitmap to svg files? I've seen that through Inkscape verbs you can use "SelectionTrace", but that still requires manual input. Alternative to Inkscape for Windows 7

I have a recent laptop with Windows 7, 64 bit and 8GB of RAM. If I use any kind of effects on inkscape I can forget using inkscape for the day because the speed is so slow it takes a day for any movement to appear on the screen. Again trying to export to bitmap is impossible. If I don't use any effects then the speed is reasonable. I like what Inkscape is intended to do but does anyone know of a similar open source program that will work on Windows 7?? Dennis

Shortcuts not working

Good night :) I find that some keyboard shortcuts don't work, for example the # (Grid) and | (Guides) ones. May be it is because I'm using a Spanish- ISO keyboard on an English system? * I'm using Inkscape v0.48.2 on an iMac iSight —last and most powerful PowerPC iMac— running Mac OS X 10.5.8 (Leopard). Google Summer of Code 2012 Results

Hello Inkscapers! The Google Summer of Code 2012 program is now officially over. We’ve managed to have 3 out of 5 projects successfully completed by our awesome students. * Jan Pulmann created Python bindings for lib2Geom, the computational geometry library we use in Inkscape. * Samuel Chase made a lot of internal improvements to handling guides and to the coordinates system, making it easier to switch away from Cartesian system. * Veronika Irvine created a new tool for on-canvas tessellation. The code for 2geom library was written in the main development branch and hence is immediately available to all 3rd party developers. The changes to Inkscape have to be finalized before they can enter the main source code repository. Currently we don’t expect both of the new Inkscape features to be used in upcoming v0.49. We are sorry that 2 students didn’t make it, and we are going to take steps to avoid this kind of failure in the future, should we be accepted for the next runs of the program. inkex.py not found for extensions in user's directory

Thanks to ~suv I now have a copy of the inksyntax plug-in I am having trouble installing it but I think it's outside of inksyntax. At the interactive terminal I tried to import all the dependencies that inksyntax has. I could not import: inkex.py and simplestyle.py It looks like this may be a bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/551433 I am on xubuntu 11.10 I have installed a few plug-ins through synaptic Does anyone know how to export variables so that python will be able to find these two .py files or some other solution? code syntax highlighting in svg image

Hi Everyone I've been away from inkscape for a few years but I am looking forward to doing another project with it. I am trying to create a little book/pamphlet that has coloured syntax highlighting of code. It looks like there was a plug-in that would have been perfect, inksyntax, but it seems abandoned. Here is the dead link: http://xico.freeshell.org/ The project seems to have been built on highlight and pygments. The highlight command works great for me and now I have a svg of the code sample with syntax highlighting. The problem is the svg utilizes an external css sheet and inkscape and scribus cannot handle it. I am wondering if there is some tool to reintegrate the external css sheet back to inline or if if anyone has any suggestions on how I can accomplish my goal? Thanks for reading-Patrick

Custom Font Issues

Hello! I'm new to Inkscape, and I'm having some problems finding custom fonts. In the Style selector of the Text and Font Dialog, it only displays normal, italic, bold, and bold-italic. I'm using a custom font whose weight is "light" and another that's "black," but these two are not options in the Style selector. It seems like Inkscape is guessing at which matches best, but it's guessing in the wrong direction. Is there a way to explicitly specify the font to use, or to add new items to the Style selector list? Thanks for your help! Ryan

is there a way to save swatch color name into generated svg file?

hi, i am not native english speaker, please endure my poor english. i added a custom swatch color with a custom name. i hope the color name can be saved into the svg file. but inkscape actually saves the rgb values. is there a way that i can see the color name in the svg file? best regards,

weeding lines

HI, Inkscape is great for designing but if you design for use with vinyl you need to have weeding lines. is it possible to add these in inkscape or to have a extension that would add them to a file? Thanks Gaz

alignment question

Hi there, I would like to do the following: --- I would like to align elements: e-mail address and phone number to be equally far from the vertical equator of the card, and their center be on the same vertical line. How can I do that? --- The latter thing, namely, to align the centers of two text objects can be done according to "Align horizontal centers to center of anchor" of http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Align.html but it is not clear how I could do the mirroring of two text objects to the equator of the card. Bad cursor movement while dragging

Hi all, I am facing an issue while trying to drag an element to move an object or change an object dimensions. The cursor jumps to a random position after dragging a couple of seconds. This makes the objet to suddenly change its dimensions or its position, preventing me from making my drawing. I am using Arch Linux + XFCE. I have searched on the bug database but could not find anything referring to this behavior. Does anyone facing the same (or a similar) issue that knows a workaround to solve it? Is there a way to avoid CSS style attributes?

Hi, inkscape usually puts a lot of attributes into a CSS style attribute, for example: <rect x="10" y="10" width="10" height="10" style="fill:red;stroke:blue;stroke-width:2" /> Is there a way to tell inkscape to never use the style attribute but instead use SVG attributes? For example: <rect x="10" y="10" width="10" height="10" fill="red" stroke="blue" stroke-width="2" /> Regards Marco

Cutter recommendations?

Any recommendations for those paper / card cutters that can be driven by Inkscape / an Ubuntu environment? Cricut and CraftRobo are a couple of brands. We're using Inkscape to design and print buttons, the round mylar coated things you pin to your shirt, it works very well, clones and clones of clones make it easy to control the number of each design printed per sheet. We have a manual circle cutting device but aligning it with the accuracy required is a pain, and it only cuts 1-3 circles at a time (for more than one you stack pages, but that creates alignment issues too). So the immediate use for a cutter would be simply cutting 12 circles in a sheet of regular weight paper, but something more versatile would be good. Thanks, Terry

Better DXF support

Hello everyone. I'm wondering why .dxf export isn't better supported Inkscape is a great tool for drawing plans for lasercutters, but all the companies who do the cutting ony accept .dxf There are a few 'reasonable improvements' available like Better DXF, Better Better DXF and BigBlueSawDXF https://sites.google.com/site/scidiy/inkscape-dxf-output-for-lasercut But none of them are good enough to deliver a cut file without hassle. Most important are the support of layers (and the use of spaces in the layer names) and SPLINE objects that aren't rendered right. A good support for .dxf could draw Inkscape into the maker-world. Makershed/Thingtverse/Instructables websites etc. And I noticed that .dxf is NOT mentioned @ http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/FileTypes Is there any particulair reason for this? What is needed to get .DXF up to par?

Jessyink renumber effects order

Hi all, Jessyink [1]is really a very nice extension to Inkscape to enable doing dynamic presentations, I can really recommend it! There are two versions, I use the latter, Jessyink 2.0.0-alpha1. However, I usually end up adding effects and manually setting the order and eventually running out of numbers. E.g. I start to number the effects by 10, 20, 30, etc. but soon end up having orders 1, 2, 3, 4, ... and wanting to insert a new efect between e.g. 2 and 3. Therefore I wonder, is there some way to renumber the effects to make some space that I have missed? As the svg-files are just text files, I am considering a script to do this to find and renumber the effects; the finding part can be achieved by e.g. ,---- | cat my_svg_file_with_jessyink.svg|grep "sodipodi:role=\"line\">[0-9]*</tspan></text>"|grep [0-9]* `---- This gives all the lines with effect numbers, maybe sed or awk can be used in a loop to renumber in order and increment by a desired step (e.g. 10). Now, my skills are not really up to the task, so before embarking, the question is is this really the best route to go or are there any better ideas? Thanks and cheers! How to get coordinates of node handles

Hello everybody out there using Inkscape, Is it possible to get the exact coordinates of a node handle and change their numeric values? One can of course zoom in and look at the coordinates of the mouse cursor, but that's not perfectly precise. I also found this thread in the forum (http://www.inkscapeforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=295) but it doesn't really contain a good answer. Thanks in advance for your help, Julia
