Select + move

Hi, Inkscape is really a great piece of software. There's a "feature" that is quite irritating though. When I select an object, if it happens that there are other objects above or below, if I click & drag to move the selected object, then sometimes another object is selected and dragged (and sometimes not)... That's really annoying... Is there a way to force inkscape to understand that the object I want to move is the object that is currently selected and not anything else? Thanks a lot for any help! 0.46 feedback: Blur and performance

I really like a lot of the changes I see in 0.46, like dialogs opening to the right instead of floating. And is the layers dialog new? If not I must have over looked it. I definitely like the new tweak brush. But here is something that is really bugging me. In part I just made a stupid mistake, but also this is a really stupid behavior in inkscape. I spent the last hour working on a drawing (and here is the really stupid part for me) without saving. Then I turned up the blur a little. Well, I meant to turn it up a little. But I twitched, and apparently turned it up a lot. And now I see three things I would really like. First, inkscape is pegging one of my CPUs (core 2 duo, 2 gigs of ram). And it has been pegging this CPU for more then 10 minutes now. Meanwhile, the display isn't updating at all. Not just the canvas, but the dialogs, the drawing tools, the menus, none of them are redrawing. Third, there doesn't seem to be anyway to cancel the operation without quitting (which I obviously don't want to do because I stupidly didn't save). Actually, in another instance of inkscape, I see that the blur slider only goes to a hundred, and at 100 it is perfectly snappy with two strokes. The drawing that is pegging the machine only has a few dozen strokes, so it seems that complexity here is rather non-linear. So, here are somethings I think should be added: First, perhaps it would be possible for Inkscape to auto-save to /tmp or someplace when the user hasn't explicitely saved anywhere yet. Second, perhaps there should be some bound for render time. Third, the rest of the GUI should at least redraw, even if the canvas doesn't, and it should at least respond to some commands. Undo or save would be commands I might consider trying to execute during a long render. Fourth, would it be possible to thread this? Perhaps one thread for the GUI and one for rendering as a starting point? It would be great to thread rendering, but I can see how that wouldn't be so straight forward. Fifth, is there any chance of using something to accelerate certain drawing operations, like blurs? Possibly with C code (which could then have a generic version and compile time select between that or a SSE version or an Altivec version)? Or something like Pyscho, pyrex, or pypy? Sixth, this is probably more of a personal taste request, but perhaps the blur slider could be logarithmic? Creatively, the difference between 60 and 62 is pretty small, but the differences at the low end are big.

dashed line type printing problem

Hi, Anyone know what I'm running into here and, ideally, what a good workaround might be (that lets me use vector printing to pdf)? I make a new document, draw a zig-zag with the line tool, set the line type to dashed and turn the thickness up a bit, then I draw a shaded circle, and, although it looks fine on the screen, the segments of the zig-zag line have "grown" in the print preview (or even when I actually print...which is how I found it) such that a "V" shape becomes a backward "Y" where the left line of the "V" extends to the lower page bound and the right line of the "V" extends to the top page bound. If I delete the circle or switch from vector to raster on the rendering tab of the print dialog, the printing issue goes away. This is with 0.46 on ubuntu gutsy. Type1 Fonts on Windows XP

How do I configure Inkscape for Windows to see the Type1 fonts I have installed? The GIMP sees them fine (which also uses freetype), as does OpenOffice.org. The font names and corresponding pfb file names even show up in my .fonts.cache-1 file but I still can't see them in Inkscape. Thanks for any answers. 0.46 for linux

I would like to congratulate the developers for putting out a wonderful program. I have been using inkscape pre-releases downloaded from http://inkscape.modevia.com/ap/?M=D. Presently I am using the inkscape20080328rev18054AOCV.package. After the release, I checked out the above site for the autopackage as well as http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=93438, but could not find a pre-built version for linux. We find versions for MAC and Windows, but not for linux. I know, we can wait for the distros to release the program, but I have not found that in debian sid till date. New 0.46 download english version

You can also choose which translation you want when you install the program (at least in the Windows port). If you don't want tranlation just remove all and Inkscape will just be in english 'cause it will be the only language avaliable on your instalation. Hope it helps. Hystryx. latex formulae rendering

Dear all I've just installed inkscape (Inkscape 0.45.1 (Sep 20 2007))at a kubuntu machine and I am evaluating the graph annotation capabilities of the program using latex. I have also installed: pstoedit: version 3.44, python 2.5.1, PyXML-0.8.4, ghostscript 8.61 latex --version pdfTeX using libpoppler 3.141592-1.40.3-2.2 (Web2C 7.5.6) I am trying make a graph with a simple latex math symbol. Using Effects->Render->LatexFormula and then $\pi$, $\pi$ or \[\pi\] the program freezes up and in a terminal using top I can see that a gs process is taking almost the 100% of the CPU. After some time I should kill the gs and inkscape processes because nothing happens. What am i doing wrong? Are there any system configuration I am missing? Are there any evident bits that I missunderstood? If I am missing something obvious, please bear with me because this is my first try to inkscape. Another concern I have is the use of inkscape in windows because I am starting a documentation project with a colleague that uses windows. I would like to know if the drawing annotation capabilities using latex are fully cross platforms. I mean if the via Effects->Render->LatexFormula works the same way at windows. Saving Filters in Inkscape 0.46

I'm just getting into the new filters in Inkscape 0.46. So far I have been able to create a few things. I have noticed that setting up a filter at first takes a little time. What are our options regarding saving these filters and applying them to future projects? My instinct wants there to be a "save filter" or "export filter" somewhere. heathenx

Filter effects for two (or more) objects

Is my conclusion correct that until feImage is done, other primitives like feBlend, feComposite, and feMerge cannot work directly with two different objects? For example, using feComposite with the Out operator to "punch" a hole in one object shaped like another object. Kurt

problems compiling inkscape 0.46

I have downloaded the tar ball and follow the route configure ->make->make install but make does not build the executable. What am i missing? Is my system lacking any packages? uniconv conversion from .cdr on Windows XP

has anyone been able to successfully use the python utility uniconv to do a conversion on a win32 machine from .cdr to .svg, preferably from a DOS prompt, since that is easier? I can do a successful conversion from .svg to .svg in DOS, but that is not very interesting. When painting a circle in Inkscape and moving it the move is stored in the transform translate tag. Question on the Inkscape Parser

Hello, This is my first attempt to submit a question via email. I have been using the new Inkscape with SVG that is created from a text file from a different application and the formatting is correct for the XML. The issue I would like addressed is that the parsing of the Text Tag blows up in Inkscape. There are valid visible/printable characters used between the Tags such as & < or diacritical characters and these make the svg file refused by Inkscape. The file will import fine in to Scribus but I don't want to use that as there is another issue with Scribus. I think Inkscape looks much more promising and the only problem is the one mentioned here as far as using the files I need to open in Inkscape. I no it is probably not trivial but I do think that this is a parsing bug. I am attaching a stripped down version of the file I try to open so it can be reviewed and used for testing. Official Inkscape 0.46 OSX package for Tiger (10.4) users

Hello OSX Tiger users, I have posted an Inkscape 0.46 package for Tiger (10.4.x) users: http://downloads.sourceforge.net/inkscape/Inkscape-0.46-2.TIGER.UNIVERSAL.d… This package was built complete from a PPC 10.4.11 machine, and since I do not have access to an Intel Mac running 10.4.11 it has not been tested on Intel hardware. If you have an Intel 10.4.11 machine, could you please let me know if the package works for you? Apologies for the initial lack of Inkscape 0.46 package for Tiger users. Producing packages for older OS releases is always more difficult when the Inkscape Mac developers are no longer using that OS for their normal builds, and building Universal packages, even more so! Filters Effects

Please help me understand Filer effects! I'm trying to play with the filters but I must be missing something, they have explanations of what they do in the UI but when I try them most of them only turn the shape into a black / white/ transparent rectangle that looks like a bug. The only ones I got to work are blur and color matrix. Are they supposed to work? do they only work for certain type of object? Also, I don't understand something in the UI. In the filters dialog there's this complicated looking effect/connections table which I can't seem to do anything with. Is there an explanation somewhere on how to work with all this?
