The Inkscape community today is announcing the release of the newest version of its open source vector graphics editor. Inkscape 0.46 is a major update that introduces native PDF support. The implementation of PDF support in Inkscape provides an easy, open source solution to editing PDF documents. Tons of new features and performance improvements are included in this release. Dialogs now have the ability to be docked to the editing window. Gradients can be edited completely on-canvas. The new Paint Bucket Tool fills bounded areas with color. A new 3D Box tool helps create perspective-correct drawings. A new Tweak tool provides an intuitive method for editing paths and painting objects. The new Live Path Effects feature can create "brushes" and various organic effects on paths. Improvements to color management include support for color spaces other than sRGB. Most SVG filters are now implemented, and a new powerful UI is provided for editing filter stacks. == Downloading Inkscape 0.46 == Inkscape 0.46 is already included by default in Ubuntu Hardy so just install it normally. Hi, Just spreading the word that Inkscape will be exhibiting at LugRadio Live USA 2008 * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * http://www.lugradio.org/live/USA2008/ LugRadio Live USA 2008 brings San Francisco the unique atmosphere of LugRadio Live UK, an event that has developed a strong reputation for providing a range of topics about free software, Open Source, digital rights, technology and more, a compelling list of speakers, exhibitors and birds of a feather sessions, and wrapping it all in a unique, fun, loose, social and inclusive event, which is often described as combining the atmosphere of a rock concert and a computer conference. LugRadio Live USA 2008 brings this unique atmosphere to the USA, with around 30 speakers, over 20 exhibitors, an eclectic range of BOF sessions, and plenty of additional sessions such as our debate discussion panel, a showcase of five minute talks, tech demos, and of course a live recording of LugRadio in front of an audience. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Any and all are welcome to come by and visit, hang out, talk about whatever. It's also a very user-centric conference with registration only running $10. We also need any volunteers to come by and help man the booth. Even being able to commit a few hours would be a great help to the Inkscape project. Additionally we have a minor need for equipment for the booth... it's a small, informal show but we can still do with a few things like monitors or projectors (if anyone lives in the area that would be handy). Thank you for providing this fine application. Inkscape is my favorite toy and tool. Good to see the winner of the "About Inkscape" contest live. Thanks for the attention to detail in the latest version. Example: in the past, it's been a bit of trouble to find the python/xml package that supports some of the effects. Now, the effects>generate from path>interpolate error message provides the installation command. And the tool takes a break until the package is installed. I can hardly wait to try out all the new goodies. Your effort and creativity are inspiring.

SVG Open 2008 Conference, Call for Papers

Hello Inkscape Users, I would like to invite the Inkscape developers, content creators and users to present their SVG content, workflows and tools at the SVG Open conference. I would also appreciate if we could have an inkscape course or demonstration at this year's SVG Open conference. Thank you for considering an abstract submission. See CfP below: ============================= Call for Papers, SVG Open 2008 http://www.svgopen.org/ The 6th international conference on Scalable Vector Graphics will take place from August 26 to 28 in Nuremberg, Southern Germany. At this conference you can learn about subjects varying from specialized technical visualizations to interactive multimedia art. On the program there are presentations, beginner and advanced level workshops, a technical exhibition, and the opportunity to meet people from the SVG community, industry and the W3C SVG Working Group. The SVG Open 2008 organizing committee is looking for contributors presenting a paper or teaching a course. Presenters are asked to submit an extended abstract in English with an approximate length of 400 to 800 words by March 31, 2008. The abstracts are reviewed by a reviewing committee and presenters will be informed about acceptance on or before April 29, 2008. If your abstract is accepted, you will be asked to submit your full paper by August 1, 2008, according to instructions that will be sent to you. Accepted abstracts, papers and presentations will be published on the conference hand-outs and web proceedings. PaperAbstracts can be submitted at http://www.svgopen.org/ until March 31. Hi, I downloaded the latest version (Leopard) Mac OS X and installed it in my applications. When I try to start Inkscape a dialog box pops up about the start up and loading fonts, I click on OK, on the menu bar Inkscape appears with the only options being to hide the app. The app never starts, I opened X11 and it is functioning. I really would like to get this app running as I need the vector support for sign designing. Any help appreciated. Making a poster with Inkscape

Depending on the structure of the poster, in particular amount of text, use of external images, Scribus may be better suited but Inkscape could be your best tool for design of individual elements, while GIMP may also join the fray for some specific tasks. From a study of your project in the marketing design phase (what the poster will look like), you will be able to think up the best workflow, and which tools will design which part of the final output. Hello everyone, This question would and should fall under the "very general" category: I have been using Inkscape for a while - but only to make small and simple graphics (I am a PhD student and I need to create figures every now and then). I now am faced with the daunting task of creating a poster. I have never done this before. Does anyone have any tips on how to make a powerful, yet beautiful and simple poster using Inkscape? In particular, if you have made a poster using Inkscape before, could you share your experiences with me? Any input would be helpful given that I know nothing about graphic design. I apologise in advance to those of you to whom this email doesn't apply. Thanks!
