Rope tutorial trouble

I'm trying this tutorial (http://www.inkscape.org/screenshots/gallery/inkscape-0.45-3D-rope.png) with Inkscape 0.45 for Windows and I can't do the step 5: the clone's color doesn't changes although the clone is turned off - so the color clone cant'be edited by the original. Bryce and I were of the opinion that cutting the release early was important to get Inkscape 0.45 into the upcoming linux distros. The packaging problems are a bit frustrating and embarrassing but I think our priorities are in the right place. A few days to wait for packages versus 6 or more months to get into a distro release. You make excellent points. This has been the practice in the past and should be in the future. This entire cycle was week with regard to packaging. I dropped the ball on the autopackages early on. The mac packages stalled for a long time because of difficulties updating the build to sufficiently new libs. And most recently some bad management on my part allowed us to lose touch with Adib at a critical moment. I think we're over most of these hurdles now and we can start looking for ways to prevent such situations in the future. My first suggestion is redundancy among packagers. Packaging teams should help to increase our buss number. Community members, if you have even a remote interest in packaging please step forward. Aaron Spike

Getting basic fonts to show up correctly

A newbie here trying to understand fonts in Inkscape on Mac OS X (10.4.6): Basic fonts like Arial, Georgia, and Verdana are not showing up with their entire families in the Text and Font box. Arial, for example, doesn't show up, but 'Arial Black', 'Arial Hebrew', 'Arial Narrow', and 'Arial Rounded MT Bold' does. In another example, Georgia does show up, but its other family members, such as italic, bold, and bold italic, are not present. Anyone have tips on solving this issue? The Export Groups to PNG extension

I'm creating a large number of icons in a single SVG file and I'd like to export them to seperate PNG file. The export to PNg extension is great for that - but I'd like to know if there is a way to limit the export to only part of the groups in the file, say only the selected ones or only on a single layer. cheers, Michael

Inkscape Announces 0.45 Release http://www.inkscape.org :: Draw Freely. The Inkscape community today announces the newest version of its vector graphic drawing software. Inkscape 0.45 features a new Gaussian Blur SVG filter. Sponsored by Google's Summer of Code program, Gaussian Blur allows you to softly and naturally blur any Inkscape objects, including shapes, text, and images. This enables a wide range of photorealistic effects: arbitrarily shaped shades and lights, depth of field, drop shadows, glows, etc. Also, blurred objects can be used as masks for other objects to achieve the "feathered mask" effect. Numerous other new features, enhancements to existing features, and bug fixes have been included. A history dialog allows you to browse your change history. Many new extension effects are added including Pattern along Path and Color Effects. There have been performance improvements to rendering speed, on the order of 2-3% in general, and up to 5-10% for drawings using heavy transparency and/or radial gradients. Compositing quality is also improved through the removal of banding seen in gradients.
