Former AI Users - How do you save for the web?

I have a question for Inkscape users coming from Adobe Illustrator. How have you rebuilt your "Save For Web" workflow in Inkscape? Reading through the mailing lists I've come up with my own (incomplete) solution, and I'd like to see how I can improve it. I've only recently - since the 0.44 release - started using Inkscape (I was waiting for the layers pallet.) Once I got the hang of the export bitmap dialog box, I was pretty happy. Currently I have a layer on top of my full page mockup called "export" (which could just as easily be called "slices"). On that layer I have a set of unfilled, unstroked rectangles. Each rectangle has the id set to a unique name (header_bg, button_bg, etc.) and when I need to export a .png to be referenced by my .css file, I select the rectangle choose File->Export Bitmap, click the Selection tab, and export the selection out at 90 dpi. All is well. But sometimes - typically after I've had sign-off on a full page illustration, but before I've started my HTML mockup - I need to export all the selection rectangles at once, and I haven't really found a way in Inkscape to do this. From the mailing lists I know that there was an extension (SVGslice) that exported slices and html, but I'm having trouble running it on XP, and don't really need the .html anyway. In the future, as browser support improves, I'd also like to be able to export individual .svg objects that would be referenced by the .css or .html files. Again, the mailing lists have been helpful with suggestions on how to keep libraries of individual .svg resources and import them into one file (e.g. import character illustrations into a comic strip), but our workflow goes the other way. In our department we use AI, and now Inkscape, to design web application UI/UE. First we create a series of sketches, developing the UI elements in the context of the full page to the point where we have a tight, accurate illustration that gets final approval. Then we create a mockup with .html, .css and .png files that is developed into a series of prototypes until the final template files are delivered to the software engineers. Our sketches-illustrations-mockups-prototypes-templates thing works pretty well, but I feel like I'm pushing it when I try bring Inkscape into the workflow. Inkscape is great with a create-one-from-one workflow, but mine is really a create-many-from-one workflow. So I'm not sure if I'm asking the tool to do something (save multiple selections as bitmaps to a directory of my choosing, and warn me if I'm overwriting an existing file) that it was never intended to do. Just to cover my bases, I know that I could export out a bitmap of the full page illustration and then cut it up in The Gimp, or use ImageMagik, but that's one of the (many, many) reasons why I've soured on Adobe's tools in the first place. Having to launch big apps to do simple (To me, anyway. I'll understand if what I've described above is actually complicated to code.) tasks. So, thanks for reading this far. I'm just one data point, but I'll bet there are other disgruntled AI users who are looking at Inkscape that realizing, "Hey, I *can* use this in production!" Especially those of us who are really focused on eventually delivering .svg assets. So to those AI users: How have you rebuilt your "Save For Web" workflow in Inkscape?

Entering numerical values multiple times with lines

Hi, I'm using the stable .44 on Windows XP and experiencing a (subjectively) strange behaviour. Summary ------- When working with straight lines (contour, no fill),I have to enter numerical values for height multiple times to end up with the wanted value. The values approach the wanted value for a few steps instead of "getting it right" the first time. Question -------- Is that a feature or a bug? Example ------- Created a vertical, straight line with the SHIFT-F6 tool (can't remember the the english name at the mo), height is 95,286px, width is 1px, but should be exactly 100px. 1st time entered: 99,950 2nd time entered: 99,999 3rd time entered: 100,000 Comments are appreciated, thanks in advance.

How to archive an alpha fade out for an image

Hi all, I'm very new to Inkscape and the possibilities that are made possible with a tools like this, so please forgive me if my question is obvious or otherwise stupid... But I have already searched for an answer to the following on the net and I cannot see how it is done. I would basically like to archive the same "fade out" on a new image as seen on the attached image. If you put this picture on a dark background, you can see that it kind-of shines. I have tried with the "Blur Egde" tool (as well as many other approaches, but none of these give me the same illusion. So... how do you get the same effect? Is it possible at all? -- /tonny

Blend Tool Substitute

I am new to inkscape and was wondering what tools in Inkscape would I use to achieving effects like the Blend tool in Illustrator. It renders the same for me (Inkscape-0.44-1.win32.exe) as it does in FoxFire from the web. You may be seeing a hardware problem. Thats a 2M file (map-save.svg) and when opened in Inkscape it caused my page file to increase by about 450M, also max's out CPU usage (2.5Ghz, 512RAM). imigital On Fri 8/25/2006 12:14 PM Carl R. Great JOB!

I just got around to trying Inkscape today. I had downloaded it a few weeks ago, and one thing and another kept getting in my way of trying it out. But I am working on a Mac application and needed some "decent" icons, so today was the day. MAN! I'M BLOWN AWAY! I've used Illustrator at work in the past, and Inkscape, to my eye, does it ALL. Very, very nice app. It now sits in my doc right next to GimpShop. Keep up the excellent work. There are those of use who can't afford Adobe's offerings that appreciate what you're doing. SVG rendering problem

I'm having difficulties getting inkscape to properly render some SVG files (using version 0.43 on a fedora core 3 system). An example file is here: http://edwards1.phy.ohiou.edu/~brune/map-save.svg inkscape map-save.svg -z -w 600 -e test.png does not render it properly (e.g. compared to batik). Also the image is not displayed properly if I open it with inkscape. Curiously, converting to eps works fine: inkscape map-save.svg -z -T -E test.eps I also find the same problem running on windows XP (installing Inkscape-0.44-1.win32.exe). Is this a bug? pdf export and images

hi, i'm using inkscape 0.44. I want to export a drawing containing imported png images to pdf. It contains transparency. with 0.43 it worked quite well except for the transparency. in 0.44 with windows the transparency worked. with linux not. and with both I encountered the problem that the images were not contained in the final pdf. What could cause probably this? Did I miss something in the options? best regards, stefan
