Thanks to everybody pointing out the ctrl+d option (duplicate object); that is absolutely the solution I was looking for, and as somebody pointed out, it is true and convenient that that way you don't even need to release the control key during the whole procedure. Thanks a lot! Another reason to dump xfig (after years of good service though!).

xfig like copying

This is a follow up on my earlier post regarding copying object while retaining horizontal or vertical alignment. I just figured that the easiest way to do this is to: 1) Copy object 2) Paste in place (from the edit menu) 3) then move the new object while holding the ctrl key It is quite interesting to compare the xfig and inkscape interface. Although Inkscape is nowadays 100x better than xfig, the original xfig interface has some nice features with which you can do some things really quick (Maybe that is just because I am used to it. But to give just an example). For example, if you have a drawing and there is a whole bunch of objects that need to be copied, each to different place. In Xfig, you can just click the copy icon, and you are in copy mode. Every object you touch with your mouse+click will be copied. In Inkscape, or any other modern drawing program for that matter, you need to perform a couple of operation to each object. I wonder whether I am the only one whole likes these Xfig features.

question about copying while maintaining perfect alignment

There is a way of copying in Xfig that is really handy, and I wonder whether something similar is available in Inkscape. In Xfig, you can click the copy Icon and then copy the original with the middle mouse button clicked to a position that is either perfectly horizontally or vertically aligned. This is handy if you want a copy of the original perfectly next or underneath the original. In Inkscape I have to do this differently. I first copy and paste the object to a new location, and then I have to manually align it to its original using the alignment dialog. Of course that is not too hard, but in Xfig it is easier. Since this is an operation that I use often, I miss the Xfig way of copying. Maybe it is possible in Inkscape, since there are so many handy key shortcuts I am not yet aware of. I looked this up in the Inkscape tutorials, but could not find it yet. Let me know if there is an easy way to do this. Thanks.

Symbol & other font in Windows

Hi all, I'd just like to signal that the 0606051800 build isn't showing some fonts over here (WinXP SP2). Mainly Symbol, Webdings and Wingdings and some others. They're regular TTF fonts, like the rest, but simply do not show up in the list. Any ideas? Thanks, Arnout

Is it a bug or a feature that inkscape can't upsample an embedded raster image? also if an image is rotated it doesn't get done very well (do the same rotation in the gimp and it will be nice and smooth) FYI batik handles upsampling and rotation nicely, although the build I'm using doesn't seem to antialias the edges of images :( Any idea when this will be implemented in inkscape? should i file a bug? I was looking at the Roadmap, sepecifically Milestone 11/Inkscape.45 and it listed PDF export as an option, but I have already been able to export directly to PDF from the Inkscape export dialog from at least .43 onwards. Does this mean that it will have a PDF export that will be handled by Inkscape itself rather than by Ghostscript or there will be more features or what? http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Roadmap

Exporting objects as SVG?

I get the feeling this question was asked on the list sometime back, but I can't honestly remember if it was or not. Currently it's possible to draw a complex image in Inkscape, and export a portion of that image as a bitmap by selecting the "selection" tab on the Export Bitmap panel. What I'm wondering is, is it possible to do something similar with SVG? If I've drawn a complicated object in Inkscape and I want to save parts of that object separately, what do I do? For example: I draw a webcomic and I've been using Inkscape for it for at least three releases so far. It works pretty well, but I have to keep all the characters saved in a single template file for re-use. The more characters I add the larger the file gets, and if the comic gets too complicated pretty soon the hard drive is thrashing just because there are so many unnecessary elements in the file. It would be great if I could save each character as an individual svg file that I could import into a document as needed, but I can't seem to find any option in the menu that does that. autopackage upgrade

I have installed the autopackage distribution of Inkscape .44pre2 on Ubuntu 6.06. It works great - I enjoy the new icons, cloning, and the export to .xcf with layers and there looks like there is much more I could use with some more exploration. After the summer of code comes back with their projects for Gimp, I should be able to do more advanced design on Linux than on my Mac. And not long after that we will have Xara 1.0. I will have a hard time deciding whether to do more with Xara or Inkscape. Excellent progress. Anyway, how do I upgrade the autopackage when the final .44 comes out? Do I need to uninstall the old one and then reinstall the new one or do I just install the new package?

0.44pre2 on OS X: no more icon for SVG file type?

Hello all! I am using Inkscape on Mac OS 10.4.6 / Intel. Just installed 0.44pre2 over 0.44pre0 and saw that the SVG file icon is now set to the blank one, but Inkscape is still set as a default application for the SVG files. With all Inkscape versions it displayed Inkscape logo on the icon. I tried re-assigning Inkscape as a default application for SVG files, but that didn't help. Reverted to pre0, no luck, then to pre2, all the same. I tried assigning GIMP as a default app for SVG - now all SVG files have the GIMP logo. But reverting to Inkscape as a default app makes the icon blank again. Perhaps some icon is missing in the .app bundle. Inkscape window too big under Linux

Hello, I've been using Inkscape on Windows for some time, and everything worked fine. Now that I've switched to Linux, I've noticed that the Inkscape window is bigger than my screen! Resizing doesn't help - it lets me expand the window all I want, but not compress it beyond the default size. Maximising doesn't help either - the window remains at exactly the same size. I'm working at an 800×600 resolution, both in Windows and in Linux. When switching to 1024×768 the problem vanishes. But I can't always work at that resolution - my poor little screen was not designed for such abuse, so I can't distinguish any details at 1024×768. What can I do about this problem? Trace Bitmap

NEEDED: Win32 User for testing

Hi all, If you are on Windows and and have a little extra time this week, you can help Inkscape out considerably. There are several _bad_ bugs that are going to afflict Windows users of our new Inkscape release, that we may have a decent chance to eliminate. However, unfortunately our developers don't have access to Win32 machines, so cannot easily test their fixes to make sure they've fixed the issues. If you are on Win32, and are comfortable installing and running extremely cutting edge stuff (including running gdb), you can help. We need someone who for the next week or two can install the latest code and test out a few bugs we're working on. This is a great way to contribute to Inkscape and to directly make it better for Windows users, so if you've wanted to do that but felt that your technical skills were a bit light, this may be a perfect opportunity. trace bitmap problem

Hi, I have Inkscape 0.44 and Inkscape 0.43 installed. ( winXP ) With 0.43 Trace Bitmap works very well, as expected. With 0.44 I never was able to trace a bitmap with the settings Multiple Scanning > Color, or > Monochrome. It seems to work, but never brings a result. Regards, Hago

I actually have synfig and have played with it a tad. I haven't gotten my head around how it works yet, so I'm not sure it'll work for me. The demo animation at the site, which I believe was called "Prologue," was nicely done, but very "vector tweeny." I appreciate that synfig takes that route to streamline production for a small, even one-person, staff. I'm just not sure I want to go that route yet. I forgot to mention that I'm on XP for the time being. I'm easing toward switching over to Linux, but there's some inertia there. At any rate, I can't try out Ktoon since it isn't available for Windows yet. One reason why I'm hoping to cobble something together that uses Inkscape is that I've learned how to get a really nice, natural looking ink line in Inkscape. No other software that I've tried, including demos of some of the proprietary stuff, seems to compare. Plus, the workspace in Inkscape, with the appropriate template overlay, looks like an animation board and lends itself well to things like panning a background image - assuming I can solve the precision issue. And for character animation, each stage can obviously be put on its on layer. I just downloaded a program called Monkey Jam to stitch the pngs together into scenes. I'll play with that some next week. Then, of course, I'd assemble the scenes and add sound and so on in a compositor. Inkscape and animation

Hi all, I've been using Inkscape for single-panel cartooning for a few months now and have really come to like the program for vector drawing (with a Wacom tablet). I'm now planning to do some cartoon animation and I was wondering if anybody has used Inkscape for this purpose as part of your workflow. I realize that Inkscape isn't set up to do animation in and of itself, but I could see it working really well in conjunction with a sound editor and a compositing tool, compositing a series of png outputs. But I wonder how to do certain things, like panning across a background for instance. I can certainly move an image across the page in Inkscape and output that as a series of pngs, but how would I make sure each incremental move is at the right speed and in the right direction, so the resulting animation is smooth? Has anybody out there done this sort of thing with Inkscape? Is there any sort of onion skinning plug-in or anything like that? I've used a bit of both apps. I really like synfig. Robert has given the open source community a massive gift. There is not as much develop on it as I would've first thought. If I knew anything about programming (and I intend to learn as soon as I get home to Aust) I would jump right in and help the guys....and inkscape to. I reakon if there were some full fledged forums for synfig, there would be MUCH more interest and possibly more develpment too. It's a real bitch to compile aswell.. As far as Ktoon is concerned, I found it similar to Toonboom, which I used for a bit back in my windows days. Not quite as advanced and documentation was very rare. buggy layers dialog

I had 2 layers, both visable then I renamed them both to something different than layer 1. layer 2. Gradient from black to blue

Hi all, I'm having a problem with gradients. It seems I'm only able to create gradients from a color to white. I wish to create from black to blue. How can I do this? Is there any reference on gradients on the web? The tutorials don't seem to go through this and everything else about gradients seem to create <color> => white gradients. Printing revisited.

Recently we had a discussion in the Fedora Marketing mailing list about color management and accuracy in Inkscape, and this discussion touched several topics like the lack of true CMYK support, not Inkscape's fault, but the format's; and other color accuracy topics including color profiling with ICC and other stuff. By looking at the SVG site over at the www.w3c.orgsite, I noticed there was a proposed spec for SVG for printing, which would be called SVGP, and if I understood correctly it would be a subset of SVG 1.2 spec with some additional features with printed media specifically in mind. My questions to the list, actually is if this is going to be supported by Inkscape, and if the developers know a time frame when we could expect to have the first implementation of the spec? In the mean time, what method do you recommend for producing printed material off Inkscape's designs? Being that currently there is no conversion table or color management with ICC (or not that I am aware of) and the issue of color accuracy, which is a major problem for a lot of people. Some one over the mailing list proposed EPS and PDF, but if further manipulation is required, how can these formats be easily manipulated? Unless you had the original SVG that originated these other files it would be impossible... Anyhow, how are people making printed materials with Inkscape doing it? Thanks in advance!

Draw the connections to the midpoint of the sides of the squares. Then when compenents are placed against each other, they connect. Inkscape on Windows

I recently had to remove a virus (actually hundreds) from a friend's machine by kicking his hard disc back to the stone age. As I'm not yet able to convince him of the merits of Linux, I had to re-install Windows ME and I thought it would be good to introduce him to Inkscape. As is probably well known to everyone other than me, this is apparently not possible because of GTK+ requirements and the installation failed. However it didn't fail tidily and the first indication that something was wrong was when I tried to start the apparently installed application. Obviously I needed to un-install the package, but couldn't do it easily because there was no entry in the Control Panel|Add or Remove Programs table. In consequence I had to clear the Inkscape components manually, including the Registry. If some versions of Windows are not supported I would have expected the Windows installer to check its environment before creating directories, Registry entries, Icons etc.? Do I need to raise a bug, or is this issue already known? Peter HB

I've recently been using Inkscape for schematics / block diagrams, which involved a lot of grid work. It sounds like you are referring to the "Snap distance" field on the "Grid" tab of the Document Preferences. As far as I have found, this value is the maximum distance the cursor must be from a grid point before it will snap there. e.g. if you have a 1x1mm grid, and snap distance is set to 0.25mm, then if you have the cursor in the centre of that grid square, it will not snap anywhere. To make sure the cursor will always snap to the nearest grid point, snap distance should be at half of the grid spacing value. (It doesn't seem to make any difference if it is larger, so I just set all three values to the same). Also, for schematic work, I have found that it is best to turn off the "Snap bounding boxes to grid" option, because with this on, horizontal and vertical lines will snap in three ways: first one edge will snap to the grid, then its centre line, and then the other edge. Slightly OT perhaps, I downloaded the Inkscape SVN a few days ago, and have been poking at it to try to understand it, and managed to break some stuff. I'd like to download the latest version again, and just overwrite my changes. Is there an easy way to do that? I'd rather not download the whole thing again. Grid questions.

I've not quite grasped how the grid works (it helps a lot!), but I'm drawing some schematics and I need millimetric precision (literally), so I need each square to be precisely 1mm2 and the nodes to snap to them... Now the "problem" I have is that I don't quite understand what the "adjust distance" attribute of the grid does and to what value set that. Any help will be appreciated.

output filter not recognized

I'm running Inkscape 0.43 on Windows XP SP2 I have attempred to find whatever log file Inkscape might be writing, but can not find any such log files, so I do not know what is happening. Is there a command line option that turns on logging relavent to extensions? I am trying to write a custom SVG output filter. I started by making a copy of the svgz_output.inx extension. My extension just does nott not appear in the Save As dialog. I do have Perl installed. I use it for other purposes. It is in the PATH by default, so any application should be able to find it. The problem I was having was more that the minimum size of the dialogs was very big (e.g. the document prefs dialog had a minimum width of about 1/5 the screen - this is at 1600x1200 with Windows XP "normal" font sizes). A lot of the text input fields seemed much wider than necessary, so it might be something to do with calculating the width of these text fields. Thinking about lining up the dialogs again, my motivation for this was that since all windows are rectangular, and you're most likely going to have a drawing window and more than one dialog on the screen at any one time, there's going to be "dead" space unless the dialogs share the same width or height. The picture I have is of several dialogs of the same width down one side of the screen, and optionally dialogs of the same height across the top/bottom, with the drawing window using the remainder of the screen. (Of course this wouldn't be the best for people with small screens) A nice way to offer this to the user might be to have a "Tile Dialogs" option, like the "Tile Windows" you often see in multi-document GUI apps. I'll put in an RFE for something like this too if there's nothing similar already. Some other random observations...which I'll also keep an eye out for in the RFE tracker... * Marker color really should change with that of the path to which it is attached * More control over marker size would be great * Is it right to always center the markers on the end nodes of the line? It is for circular markers, but not for arrows (think of a flow diagram with arrows connecting boxes), and sometimes not for other shapes. * The drop-down list for selecting markers is pretty cumbersome, this would be much better as a 2d grid (with the marker names left out, or else popping up as tooltips). Even better might be to have a separate dialog like the swatches dialog for markers. * If you are editing a document created elsewhere with fonts that are unavailable (e.g. editing on Windows, document created on Linux with Ghostscript fonts), the text tool will not pick up the font size, so making any edit to the text will change the font size to whatever is currently set in the text tool. * When editing baseline-adjusted text, the baseline-adjust is not maintained logically, e.g. if the text was "Vout" where "out" is baseline-adjusted, it is not possible to replace the "o" with another character without the baseline being reset for the new character. * Probably too specialised to be used very often, but a CAD-style snap-to- tangent / end-point / mid-point / center / etc. would be nice. * It should be possible to edit the stroke settings for a group (at least if the settings for all objects in the group are the same) Regards, Ken
