I have been using Ubuntu "Hoary" now for some time, and it's really amazing how many programs you can download or upgrade from the various repositories! All you need is an Internet connection. Prior to Ubuntu I also used Mandrake 10 for a while (and before that, SuSE 9.1), but Ubuntu is so user-friendly that I can really recommend it! I updated from Inkscape 0.30 to 0.41 via just one command line ('sudo apt-get update inkscape'). I admit that I'm still getting some error messages because I need to include some additional sources (which can be a bit confusing, but the forum http://www.ubuntuforums.org/ is great, and you usually get friendly & helpful replies). I'm looking forward to v 0.42! Close dialog box

Does anyone else find the 'close' dialog box yo be confusing? It asks a question, and presents three options none of which are a direct answer to the question: Save changes to document "x" before closing? Layer Editor?

Inkscape's use of layers I find potentially powerful, but the current interface seems limiting. Inkscape's use of layers appears more-or-less equivalent to those used in the GIMP. Therefore, would it be a good idea to implement something like the GIMP's "Layers" window, allowing the user to physically see the separate layers, toggle their visibility, and rearraign their order? There are toolbar buttons that do this. I asked a similar question a few weeks ago because I hadn't spotted them either. They appear when you have a node selected. I commented on the feature request, but someone else said that it would be better to rasterize the image, trace the shape, and then vectorize the result. I think this is a mistake, it should follow edges exactly. Win32 help

I've got a few bugs open for Win32 issues, and a few ideas on how to address them. What I don't have is a good way to compile or run Win32 tests here on my Mac. :-) What would be helpful would be anyone who could either build win32 versions with some tweaks or anyone who could run quick tests with those builds. Especially given our freeze state, I don't want to check anything in to CVS that hasn't gone through actual build and user testing. So... If anyone could help with either of those aspects (I've had a few people mention this in chat), just drop me a quick email directly and say if you can compile, test, or both. (no need to clutter the mailing lists to responses to this) Thanks.

You would have to install the fonts on at least one computer, but once you had done that, you could then convert the symbols that you need into outlines and then save them as .svg for future use.
