Question about Inkscape Graphics Library

What graphics API or library does Inkscape use to actually paint the graphics on the screen? Does it use XWindows geometries via GTK+, or does it have more direct access to the graphics hardware by using something like OpenGL? Thanks, Landon

Can't move forward

I seem to be stuck with Inkscape 0.41 at the moment :( If I try the 0.42 RPM I get a symbol library error - sorry can't remember the exact details. If I try to compile the more recent 0.42.2 'make' reports that I don't have recent enough gdk and gtk libraries. I'm using mandrake 10.1, which I would have thought was *reasonably* up-to-date, and I'm not keen on the idea of fiddling around with these libraries and risking a lot of dependency problems for the sake of one application :( -- Bungee

I have been using Ubuntu "Hoary" now for some time, and it's really amazing how many programs you can download or upgrade from the various repositories! All you need is an Internet connection. Prior to Ubuntu I also used Mandrake 10 for a while (and before that, SuSE 9.1), but Ubuntu is so user-friendly that I can really recommend it! I updated from Inkscape 0.30 to 0.41 via just one command line ('sudo apt-get update inkscape'). I admit that I'm still getting some error messages because I need to include some additional sources (which can be a bit confusing, but the forum http://www.ubuntuforums.org/ is great, and you usually get friendly & helpful replies). I'm looking forward to v 0.42! Close dialog box

Does anyone else find the 'close' dialog box yo be confusing? It asks a question, and presents three options none of which are a direct answer to the question: Save changes to document "x" before closing? Layer Editor?

Inkscape's use of layers I find potentially powerful, but the current interface seems limiting. Inkscape's use of layers appears more-or-less equivalent to those used in the GIMP. Therefore, would it be a good idea to implement something like the GIMP's "Layers" window, allowing the user to physically see the separate layers, toggle their visibility, and rearraign their order? There are toolbar buttons that do this. I asked a similar question a few weeks ago because I hadn't spotted them either. They appear when you have a node selected.
