Inkscape on MacOS X: great, but...

Dear all, I'm a new user of Inkscape and I've just subscribed to this list. I have installed Inkscape 0.42.2 on MacOS X using the standalone installer, no problem. If the developers read this message: thanks and congratulations for this wonderful software, and for the easy installation under MacOS X. I have already used several vector graphics applications: - MacDraw (later renamed as "Draw"), limited features, but incredibly user-friendy. - Corel Draw : very powerful, but Corel stopped supporting the Mac a couple of years ago. - Freehand : I bought it several months ago but never managed to get comfortable with this software, the user interface is not very intuitive IMHO and I have been having a hard time sometimes to achieve very simple tasks. I have started learning Inkscape with the basic tutorial at <http://www.inkscape.org/doc/basic/tutorial-basic.html>, and my first impression is very good, I find it quite user-friendly while being very powerful. I have nevertheless noted a few issues that may be specific to the MacOS port: 1. The characters on the status bar, and especially the pointer position at the bottom left, are almost unreadable: really tiny, and the font used makes it even worse. Same problem for the rulers numbers. The font used also makes the menus items not very nice to read, although they are readable because they are bigger. I haven't found a way to change this in the preferences. This is my major criticism as it makes the pointer coordinates and rulers unusable. 2. Many keyboard shortcuts do not work as explained in the tutorial: - Alt+Tab will select one object after the other in the drawing, not navigate amongst windows. But Ctrl-Tab will do it so this is OK. - Shift + arrow keys on a selected object moves it by 10 times the default move, as explained. But "Shift+<" doesn't allowing a 10 times resizing, because on a Mac keyboard Shift+< is equivalent to > which scales the object up by 2 px. - Alt+arrow keys does the same as "arrow keys": movement is always 2 px, whatever the zoom factor is. - Alt+> and Alt+< do the same as > and <, whatever the zoom factor is. - "Selecting under" with Alt+click doesn't work (Alt+click zooms up!). 3. Out of the three zooming actions in the Command bar: - zoom to fit selection in window (3) - zoom to fit drawing in window (4) - zoom to fit page in window (5) only one keyboard shortcut (5) works as expected (but clicking on the icon works for all three actions). Using downloaded fonts and clipart

This is my first post here. I need to learn how to bring in to inkscape, fonts and clipart i've downloaded. I found some true-type fonts and eps clipart. Are these not compatible? If so how do i bring em in? If not, then which types should i look for?

Hi list, I noticed that my inkscape is too slow with a AMD 1.2, Win98 256Mb memory. This configuration is ok ? On Pentium 4 512Mb memory is quite diferent. Any suggestion to customize inkscape to make it better ? Ezequias

That is not my experience. When I hit Tab with nodes selected, the selection moves to the next node on the path. When I hit Tab with the object selected, selection moves to the next object and the screen is centered on the object, usualy moving the part of the object that I am interested off-screen. Even when the centering does not move the display away from what I am looking at, the difference is no more visible due to the selection changing that when there are no objects selected. What I want is to see the node handles, and change selection to the other object and see the node handles on the other object. I can achieve this now by opening the document twice and using Alt-Tab two switch between one version with the first object selected, and the other instance with the second object selected. I have to be careful to use identical zoom and scroll operations on each window to get them exactly lined up. >Not to mention its being a "shame". Apple X11, troubles with font cache!

Hi folks, I have a problem. Whenever I try to run Inkscape on my iBook G4 with Mac OSX Tiger (after correctly install the X11 window manager - is it a window manager? I don't really know -) i receive an alert saying: Font caches may need to be updated There is a problem on OSX 10.4.x where X11 installation does not always generate the necessary fontconfig caches. This can be corrected by running /usr/X11R6/bin/fc-cache as root. I run fc-cache. I retry but nothing changes. So I went on #inkscape@...1099... to ask for help. The told me a solution: Manually create a dir called ~/.fonts, symlink my fontts into there, then create ~/.fonts.conf, then run fc-cache. Tried. Nothing changed. I have to give up? Inkscape 0.43 Hard Freeze

With the completion of the bug party today, it is time to move into the hard freeze for Inkscape 0.43, under the watch of our release wardens pjrm and joncruz. Today's testing unfortunately did not cover all of the new features, but we did manage to bang on the connector code really hard, and scared up a number of bugs in it (no showstoppers, but a couple crashes and a lot of odd behaviors.) We attempted to get the inkboard feature working, but did not succeed in establishing a working connection, so there's at least one bug there... We closed about 10 bugs today, mostly invalid/dupe/outdated, but there were a few fixes. pjrm and joncruz will be the release wardens for this release. All changes to the codebase must go through them. Do not commit to CVS; instead post your changes as patches to the tracker with your rationale for why to include them before or after the 0.43 release. Peter and Jon will decide when the codebase is ready for release. This may include requiring specific bugs be fixed, or tasks to be done. When they feel it is ready, the codebase will be tagged and branched, and we will enter the release phase. I will continue to track tasks for the 0.43 release, but it will be up to them whether to wait until all those tasks are complete or to decide we are ready to release with some tasks still unfinished.
