You are right: an official manual should be available. I wouldn't like
to undermine Tavmjong's effort, however, and I see nothing bad in
Kevin's usinginkscape.com. But:
a) a user manual should be available without Internet access;
b) a user manual should be available in as many languages as possible.
c) a user manual has to be written in such a way that it could be used
for context sensitive help;
d) a user manual browser should have a search function;
e) a user manual should be "aware" of existing tutorials.
The e) is an issue maker, since our tutorials are SVG files, not just
illustrated hypertext. The idea behind SVG is great. But what is the
real situation? Do users actually appreciate it? I've heard quite a
dozen of times users complaining that opening a tutorial takes too
much time and noone ever mentioned how much fun it is to be able to
draw right in a tutorial.
So, if we want Inkscape's documentation to rock the world, we need to know:
1. Do we have human resources to maintain a good thorough user manual?
If we do, what would be the best way to organize this work?
2. Do we have human resources to maintain translations (Cedric's &
Kevin's XML file in SVN is about 500 Kbyte large)? If we do, what
would be the best way to organize their work?
3. Is it possible to reuse GIMP's approach to context help?
4. What should we use as user manual's browser?
My thoughts on some of the above.
1. We do not have such human resources as of now. We have neither one
single coordinator of the documentation effort, nor instant
contributors. If I am wrong, please stand up high and blame me :)
2 . We _might_ have human resources to provide translation of the
manual into _some_ languages. I know that at least German and
Brazilian communities are quite active, dunno for others. There is no
way a single person can instantly maintain such a huge translation,
stay sane and be able to work to pay the bills :) A team of 2-3 people
is a minimum. That's what I know from my experience with translation
of GIMP's docs.
Please share your thoughts.
Cheers,
Alexandre

Inkscape Project Status
by Bryce Harrington
Just to give some visibility into some of the work bubbling away these
days:
Cairo renderer: Bulia has taken point on investigation of conversion to
Cairo. Some tough problems have been uncovered but we're gaining a
clearer picture of what needs done. Presently this looks like it will
require an all at once brute force approach, rather than incremental
refactoring. If so, we'll need to reach a decision on how to
undertake that while minimizing disruption to SVN HEAD users.
Build system: There is definitely a concensus that our current build
system sucks. Options include CMAKE, Bob's buildtool, or just a
cleaned up automake. We really need to have interested parties mind
meld and find a single solution.
Version control system: Mental has been experimenting with git and
trying to get it to operate with svn. This study is still very early
on, but if it works out well, one day we may begin encouraging
developers to use git.
Bug tracking: I have been experimenting with use of Mantis with the
goal of replacing our SF bug tracker. It looks good, but the
principle issue is how to migrate the bugs and their history from SF
to Mantis. I'm also interested in seeing if it can be combined well
with Drupal, maybe along with Pootle. Any drupalheads out there?
Manual: We've got a good unofficial non-free manual/book and several
[semi-]official incomplete free manuals. There is discussion about if
efforts can be combined to produce a good official free manual.
Anyway, I've probably missed something, but I think that covers the
pending changes that are percolating. Most of these would benefit from
discussion, so we can make sure there is a rough concensus favoring the
change - so if you have concerns about any of these changes, now's a
good chance to bring 'em up.

Last call for translations' updates for 0.45
by Josef Vybiral
Hello fellow translators,
this is the last call before we mark 0.45 as final. Please, if you
still have got any updates to translations for 0.45 left, put them to
the sf.net patch tracker and assign them to me(cwebb) or Arpad. We will
apply them as soon as possible to get the release on time.
So far we increased the number of significantly translated files to 27
which is really good number. And if my memory does not fail on me, there
is at least one translation left, the Esperanto one :)
Thanks everyone for your hard work.
Sincerely
Josef Vybíral a.k.a cornelius

No string like that anymore. Please download latest from SVN.
> msgid "Backspace"
I translated it as "delete a char backwards"

> "with gaps)"
Stack: put on top of each other
Tiling: filling with tiles
> msgid "Increase to make the pen drag behind, as if slowed by inertia"
> -- drag behind?
Be slow to react
> msgid "RGB Barrel"
I translated it as "rotate RGB channels"
> msgid "Lorem ipsum"
Latin, I think we shouldn't translate. Try it out, it inserts
some text starting with "Lorem ipsum".
> msgid "Extrude"
I translated it as "pull out"
> msgid "Pattern along Path"
Repeatedly draw a pattern following a path as if the pattern
were the stroke for that path. Screenshot:
http://www.inkscape.org/screenshots/gallery/inkscape-0.45-patternalongpat...
> msgid "Jitter nodes"
Something like "move each one randomly" -- "scatter", "disperse",
"diffuse"
> msgid "Straighten Segments"
Make segments more straight (less curved)

tutorial-tips.xml
by Alexandre Prokoudine
Hi,
Just to make sure we don't screw up with tutorials. Yesterday
tutorial-tips.xml was updated to fix mentioning Gaussian blur as a not
available feature. The change is tiny -- just 2 or 3 sentences.
If you haven't updated your translation and you still have time for
it, please do so. If you won't be in time, we will still have 0.45.1,
I guess ;-)
