0.47 about screens in progress
by Nicolas Dufour
Hi
Thanks to all who confirmed or added their translation (some translations still need to be confirmed!). Wiki page updated (http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/AboutScreenTranslation).
Johan is very busy at the moment, thus I've started to translate the screens by myself.
I've tried Excellentia, but due to a very limited accents support, I've finally switched to Harabara Hand
(http://www.dafont.com/harabarahand.font). The only drawback is that it
doesn't support Cyrillic and other Unicode characters.
Since I haven't found a nice script Cyrillic font, the
Russian screen uses URW Chancery L (a default Ubuntu font). It's not a
script font, but it looks better than a Times or Arial in this context.
The translated screens are now (revision 22547) br, fr, it, nl, pt_BR, and ru.
Could you please take a look at the screens and tell me what you think of the chosen fonts before I continue?
Johan, do you want to keep your original untouched, or replace the "draw freely" font by Harabara Hand (or another script font)?

For me it sounds a bit strange too. I think it is because I read the
English "Draw freely" as an imperative form. So in German and Dutch that
would make "Zeichne frei" and "Teken vrij". Unfortunately, the double
meaning of 'free' is lost in translation :(. Personally, I feel the text
should not be translated to Dutch at all. It is uncommon and strange in
Dutch to translate catchphrases like this.

Thanks!
I've tried to write down the previous 0.46 and 0.46dev about screen translated strings:
about.bg.svg -> РИϹУВАЙ ϹВОБОДНО
about.br.svg -> Tresit Dinask
about.fr.svg -> Dessiner librement
about.gl.svg -> Debuxa con liberdade
about.it.svg -> Disegna in Libertà
about.pt_BR.svg -> Desenhe Livremente
about.ru.svg -> Рисуй свободно
about.sk.svg -> Kreslite Slobodne
about.sl.svg -> Rišite svobodno
about.sr@...239... -> Slobodno crtaj
about.sr.svg -> Слободно цртай
But I've a huge doubt concerning the Bulgarian (all uppercase?), and the Cyrillic Serbian (I can't read the last world, and I've translated it directly from the Latin alphabet. Quite sure it's wrong...).
Neutronenspalter also gave the German translation to the list ("Frei Zeichnen").
Johan, do you have time to create the screens for those languages?

We have two options:
1. (fast and easy) Links all affected po files (4 or 5) to the original and untranslated about.svg file (which is already updated in SVN). Since it's only translation stuff, it can be done very quickly.
2. (probably longer) Johan Forsberg already told us he's ok to translate as soon as he has the font and the strings. Be we first need to know the 0.46 "draw freely" font name... and then send it with the translated strings to Johan.
(see http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_name=27d3007109092907...).
But I'm afraid it's a little late for option 2...

[Fwd: [Inkscape-devel] Changes to .desktop file]
by Joshua A. Andler
Hey Translators,
Would anyone be opposed to this one last string related change? I will
defer to you all on this one as you would be the ones most "negatively"
affected.

Josh

Strings Changed (packaging related)
by Joshua A. Andler
Hey All,
I just wanted to let you know that strings have changed in our .desktop
file as we were apparently out-of-date with the proper format of
information in there. I know I had said no more string changes, but this
was a packaging issue and needed to be taken care of.
The content that used to be in "Name", 'Inkscape Vector Graphics
Editor', is now in "X-GNOME-FullName", the new contents of "Name" is now
just 'Inkscape' (which I am unsure, should this even still be
translatable?), and there is now a "GenericName" which is just 'Vector
Graphics Editor'. Hopefully that is not too confusing.
If all of you wonderful translators could have this done by the end of
the upcoming weekend (so, by Monday in your local timezone), I would be
grateful.
Cheers,
Josh

Inkscape 0.47 press release

Hi,
I took the liberty of changing the topic in order to fork this trhead.

This last option would be great.
The main problem with translating wiki texts is that it's difficult to see
what has changed from one version of the text to another. I know there's an
option to see the changes in a page, that's part of the wiki philosophy, but
when using "third party" translation tools that becomes almost useless.
For example, I use a tool called "OmegaT" to translate web pages. The
workflow is as follows (for almost all types of texts):
1- download the html page
2- segment the file (the software separates the text in "translation
units"; phrases, titles, etc.)
3- translate all the segments
4- put the file back together in the target language
5- upload the translated file
Now imagine the original file changes, the workflow is almost the same:
1- download the html page
2- segment the file (this separates the text in "translation units";
phrases, titles, etc.)
3- the software detects the segments that are not the same and marks them
as "fuzzy" (usually indicating a percentage of coincidence)
4- translate the changed and new segments
5- put the file back together in the target language
With wiki texts the worklow fails at #1. You cannot download the text to
be interpreted by the software, so it all becomes a manual process (back to
the ice age of comparing texts one next to the other, yuk).
I don't know a real solution yet, maybe there's space here for an
open-source "Wiki Translation" project ;-) such as those discussed at
http://wiki-translation.com/
Anyway, We'll do our best !!!

Re: [Inkscape-translator] Inkscape 0.47 on the horizon (Call for help)
by Lucas Vieites
Hi,
I just copied the English text to the existing "es" page:
http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Inkscape047-PRannounce-es
but I think there's parts of the text that can/should be omitted in the
final press release.
Also, It's very difficult to keep a translation up to date in a wiki if
the original is not finished, So it would be very useful if the press
release is as much finished as possible before translation begins.
Are we at this point?
Are major changes in the press release to be expected?
Thanks,

Inkscape 0.47 on the horizon (Call for help)
by Joshua A. Andler
Hey All,
I forgot to post to the user and translator lists because I was too
excited. :)
I think we closed out the last of the blocker bugs today!
So, will people please help ensure that the release notes are up to
date? I'm headed there in just a minute to document my latest changes.
http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Release_notes/0.47
Regarding PR, I am going to continue with what was started here:
http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/AnnouncePlanning047
If you are an inkscape user who wants to contribute, even if you can't
program, this is the perfect way to give back to the community. Please
help us flesh this out and refine it.
Packagers, please package up Pre3 if you have not already done so as a
practice run... and honestly, I think it would be safe to plan a release
for next week (between Monday the 5th and Friday the 9th), provided
packages are available and no new issues arise.
Any objections to this proposed plan? Any thoughts on if releasing on a
specific day of the week will get more notice?
Oh, and translators... please get any updates submitted asap. Thanks!
Cheers,
Josh

Changed a string
by Joshua A. Andler
Hello Translators,
I am so sorry to have to tell you that I had to change a string during
String Freeze as it was not clear enough in English. Again, it relates
to the Save page in preferences.
Given that this happened we will give you all a few extra days for
translations. It would be great if the translations could be completed
by next Wednesday.
Cheers,
Josh
