Translation of Tutorials

Triggered by an earlier message about updating tutorials, I managed to find the v1.4 Basic Tutorial, updated its Dutch translation and created an MR. (Fingers crossed for its approval) Now, the Basic Tutorial po's had recently been updated. This is not the case with the po's for the other tutorials. Should I go ahead updating the Dutch translations for the tutorials in the 1.4 branch, or should I hold off for now, because these require source updates as well? What to do with "deleted" strings in the po file

Hi there, I just noticed that my es.po file has a whole bunch of "deleted" strings at the end of the file, these lines start with "#~". There are about 10.000 lines that were probably in an earlier version of Inkscape but are no longer used. Is it safe to delete those lines? In my case, it's 1/6 of the file, approx 300 KB. Hi translators ! - The deadline for submitting translations going into Inkscape 1.4 is *Oct 7th*. - I made a new, (hopefully) easier, process to submit translations, which will not involve dealing with git and branches : One can now go to a specific gitlab thread, and attach the updated po file in there. An automated process will include it, and give you the translation statistics with the given file in the given branch. Hi Stephan, thanks for your work on the Dutch translations! However, we need you to submit your work in one of the official ways: There are three ways to submit a po file to the Inkscape project: https://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/Translation_information#Submit_finished_work Development in Inkscape (as well as translation) happens in the open, we do not usually send attachments by private email to just a single contributor. This is useful for a couple reasons: 1. Other people can see that you are doing stuff and thank/congratulate/motivate you ;-) 2. Others who see it may feel motivated to contribute 3. The task you are giving to other contributors is 'open for taking' by anyone, not just by the one person you addressed (they may not have time). Please let us know in the chat when/if you encounter any obstacles. ID 3360 - PAGE,[PAGE]

I suspect that text between square brackets [*] is not to be translated E.g. ID 3360: PAGE,[PAGE] The first instance of PAGE is for me to translate, the second instance between [ ] is to be left untranslated. Is this correct? Kind regards, Stephan

How to translate ID 1626 "Namedview; Update=1, Replace=0" ? Possible typo in ID 1643 ? It says "Unhid selected items..." shoudn't this be "Unhide selected items..." ? Possible typo in ID 1644 ? "Unlocked selected items and their descendents." shouldn't this be "Unlock ..." ? ID 1804: Are the "possible anchors: ..." to be translated or left in English ? Stephan

Ambiguous terminology in German translations of page border and margin

Hi everyone, I don't know if I should bring this issue up on Gitlab or here. But I think this mailing list is more appropriate. I've been trying out 1.4 beta 2 and stumbled over a rather unfortunate German translation. In the advanced snapping menu, both terms "pager borders" and "page margins" are translated to "Seitenränder". Given that they both use the same icon, the whole UX is a rather confusing. I didn't want to change the translation in just that menu and call it a day. Instead, I want to open a discussion on changing the terminology of borders and margins to clearly disambiguate them in German. Some examples for new terms: Margin: Seitenrand, Seitenabstand, Seitenrahmen, Innerer Seitenrand Border: Seitengrenze/Seitenbegrenzung, Seitenkante, Blattrand (would introduce a new concept "Blatt" which does not really exist in Inkscape, I think) I don't love any of them, but this is also just a jumping-off point. Hi Stephan, thanks for your questions! The mailing list is active and not deprecated (as you can see from my replies :) ). The reasoning behind asking for you to put your specific translation questions into the chat is that in the chat, you will most likely get help more quickly, and there won't be dozens of people getting an email for it. Thanks for letting us know about the inconsistency on the website, it's fixed now. Please do keep telling us when you encounter similar issues! As for the drastic changes, honestly, I have no concrete suggestion, but I appreciate you giving thought to potential side effects. I only have some ideas to consider: * Are there many books and frequently used instructions about Inkscape in Dutch that would get outdated all of a sudden? * Maybe a good middle way would be to address the worst things first, and then improve the rest over time? There is a lot of work to do anyway for Dutch. Not sure that really helps, but I hope you'll enjoy working on translating Inkscape to Dutch.
